Low Emission Zones in Aberdeen

What are Low emmision zones?

low emission zones (LEZ) are areas where the driving of vehicles which do not meet the specified emission standars is prohibited.

. Introduction

Background

The LEZ has been introduced in response to longstanding issues of poor air quality in Aberdeen city center. Athough pollution levels have been improving in Aberdeen in recent years, many City Centre locations still see regular exceedance or near exceedance of the annual mean NO2 objective.

Objectives

The objectives of the LEZ are:• Primary Objectives:1. Improve air quality in Aberdeen by reducing harmful emissions from transport and delivering on the Scottish Government’s statutory air quality objectives(prescribed under section 87(1) of the Environment Act 1995); 2. Support climate change targets (as set out in Part 1 of the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009) by reducing road transport’s contribution to emissions.

A two-year grace period (during which enforcement of the LEZ will not occur) will be in place for all vehicle types. This will allow people to check their vehicle is LEZ compliant and have time to consider any changes they need to make. This means that enforcement (the issuing of fines) will not start until June 2024
