Over 100 electric vehicle charging points have been installed throughout the airport, while 101 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are used by the Heathrow team.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is already being rolled out at Heathrow, with the first SAF flight taking off from the airport in June 2021. So far, 60% of Heathrow’s airlines have committed to turning at least 10% of their fuel supply into SAF by 2030. Sustainable Aviation Fuel is often made up of materials that would otherwise have gone to waste, including agricultural residues, used cooking oil, fats and greases.

A rainwater harvesting scheme has the potential to reuse around 85% of rainfall. Heathrow collects a total of 59 thousand m3 of recycled rainwater, every year.

Heathrow airport sources 100% renewable energy. This is enough to power Terminal 5 and beyond, from every individual lightbulb to the escalators!

Investment in public transport to, from and around the airport aims to reduce ground emissions. Heathrow’s Free Travel Zone encourages passengers to minimise their individual carbon footprints, while the introduction of an employee Car Share Scheme aims to address pollution and congestion.

A biomass boiler that provides Terminal 5 with 85% of its heat on demand by using waste heat, thereby reducing CO2 emissions. It is believed that this saves around 10,877 tonnes of carbon per year!
