Living in Texas, Anglo-Americans and Tejanos struggled with the lack of freedom in their colonies. The dictatorship that was run did not suit the Texans, causing them to take matters into their own hands and break off from Mexico.

The Republic of Texas, after multiple attempts, had finally gotten approval to enter the United States, annexing as the 28th state of the US.

The US and Mexico were arguing over the border that should be established between Texas and Mexico. Texans wanted the Rio Grande river to be the border, but Mexico wanted the Nueces river(up north from the Rio Grande) to define the border.

President Polk was eager to buy California and New Mexico from Mexico and sent someone to offer 30 million dollars for it.

Henry David Thoreau was jailed for avoiding his taxes. Thoreau avoided taxes in protest of the Mexican - American war because he was an abolitionist and believed the expansion of the US would greatly increase slavery.

The Bear Flag revolt of California was caused by American settlers in California wanting California to be a part of the US. Settlers in California continuously rebelled against the Mexican government.

The capture of Mexico City happened during the Mexican-American war, which involved multiple battles near Mexico City in September 1847.

The treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo concluded the US-Mexican war, established boundaries, and Mexico ceded multiple states to the US (Mexican Cession).
