Four Rs of Conflict Management

Resolve: If conflict is unavoidable, follow some of the previous steps in the story titled “Conflict Resolution”:

  • Person to person
  • Listening to understand
  • Time to cool off
  • Find a common interest
  • Never assume
  • Move on

Recognized: Foresee when there is a build up toward a possible conflict.

Reflect: Think about the conflict afterward to find ways it could have been prevented.

Respond with Respect: Your response prior to this step is critical if your desired outcome is avoiding conflict or resolving it.

Four R's

Use the 4 R's and other good management techniques to help a conflict be seen as productive and positive rather than antagonistic and bad. Unresolved disagreements can impair a team's development and harm the organization.

  • Explore the reasons and causes for the conflict. While doing so, each team member should be open and yet respectful of each other.

  • Identify what might happen if the conflict is unresolved and how team members can constructively work together to resolve it so the team can move on.

  • Encourage team members to examine their reactions to the conflict to identify destructive reactions that they should correct and constructive reactions that they should foster. This will help team members recommit to the success of the team.

  • Have the team decide upon the approach that will most effectively resolve the conflict, given that the team members have been unable to do so.
