A certificate for membership in the American Colonization Society, ca. 1840. During the 19th century, the American Colonization Society was the principal institution promoting the resettlement of African Americans to Africa.
Hundreds of thousands of people join in a multiracial March on Washington in August 1963. The peaceful demonstration for civil rights reform culminated with Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
At the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos outraged the U.S. Olympic Committee by giving a Black Power salute during the medal ceremony.
African Americans and abolitionists are expelled from Tremont Temple in Boston on December 3, 1860.
