Heritability
How traits are inherited and measured
Most research conducted on heritability comes from the study of both identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic) twins. The similarities between the genes of twins can be used to help identify traits and their origin. Identical twins share near exact genomes so any divergences in characteristics between identical twins are probably due to unshared environmental factors.
Traits are quantified on a range of between one and zero. Where a trait that’s variability is classed as near zero is determined more by enviroment and the variability of traits classed as close to one are determined more so by genetics. This gives us a clear idea of a person's development over time and how their traits can be attributed to either environmental occurences or genetic ones.
Heritability describes how one's gene's and environment relate to their traits and how they determine physical and behavioral attributes. These traits can dictate eye color, hair growth, the length of our toes, and potentially IQ along with psychological disorders like autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, and antisocial behavior.
