91% of plastic isn't recycled
Index
Even the scientists who set out to conduct the world's first count of how much pastic has been produced, discarded, burned or put in a landfills, were horrified by the sheer size of the numbers
Mass production of plastic has accelereted so rapidly
01
that's why we have seen leakage from global waste systems into the oceans.
"We all knwe there was a rapid increase in plastic production, but quantifying the cumulative numer for all plastic ever made was quite shocking" said last month. She went on to say that this kind of increase would 'break' any sistem that was not prepared for it.

The problem of plastic pollution is becoming ubiquitous in the oceans
The prediction that by mid-century the oceans will contain more plastic than fish has beome one of the most-quoted statistics. Henderson Island is covered in roughly 38 million pieces of plastic waste
Henry Paulson
"Economic growth and environmental protection are not compatible. They are the opposite sides of the same currency if you are looking for long-term prosperity"

by 2050 there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills
Save nature
Gaining control of plastic waste is now such a large task that it calls for a comprehensive, global approach. For some products that are very problemaic in the environment, we shoul think about using different materials, or pashing them out completely.

Plastic is versatile, hygienic, lightweight, flexible and highly durable. It accounts for the largest use of plastic worldwide and is used in a number of packaging applications including containers, bottles, drums, trays, boxes, cups and vending machine packaging, baby products and protective packaging. For example, I always carry around plastic bottles or snacks closed in a plastic bag
How much plastic do you use in your daily life?
07. Versus
Most of the rest ends up in landfills where it may take up to 500 years to decompose, and potentially leak pollutants into the soil and water. It's estimated that there are already 165 million tons of plastic debris floating around in the oceans threatening the health and safety of marine life.
What do you think happens to the plastic bottles and containers when they're thrown away?
07. Versus
There are five gyres to be exact—the North Atlantic Gyre, the South Atlantic Gyre, the North Pacific Gyre, the South Pacific Gyre, and the Indian Ocean Gyre—that have a significant impact on the ocean.
The plastic islands are the five continents of shame, the result of more than six decades of waste dumping into the ocean, mostly from land and sea traffic.

09. Map
During a storm in 1992, a ship lost three containers full of these toys and since then the yellow ducks and their friends (red beavers, green tree frogs and blue turtles) have wandered for thousands of kilometers carried by sea currents. The path taken by the Friendly Floatees.
