BIOGRAPHY

Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832–1898) is one of the most famous Russian artists. Shishkin was not only a landscape and painter, whom we know and love, but also a draftsman and engraver-aquaphorist (engraving on metal using acid etching). Having received recognition during his lifetime, Shishkin was and remains one of the most beloved folk artists.

A Monument to I. Shishkin

The only full-length monument in the world to the Russian painter I.I. Shishkin was installed in Elabuga in 1991.

Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin died on March 21 (8), 1898. Death found him at the easel with a brush in his hands. "He fell like a mighty oak struck by lightning," wrote one of the critics, using the painter's favorite image. The artist was buried in Petersburg. First, at the Smolensk cemetery, and then in the 30s of the XX century, his ashes were transferred to the Necropolis of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
