Understanding Resources

Information either comes to us, or we seek it out when we have a question or need help. Sometimes we receive information about our health without searching for it, from a doctor, teacher, or the internet. The information we receive is not always correct so it is important we know what a quality source is. Think about the different ways information and resources come to you.

Where do we get information?

Ihe best information is usually found in multiple places

Multiple Sources

Good resource finding requires good questioning

Ask Questions

You need to make sure the information you are receiving is from a quality Source

Quality Sources

We all know that the internet has more information than we will ever be able to see but we also get information from books as well as people. This week, you will be finding information from all of these sources.

Where Can We Get Information

  • The internet
    • quality websites with .gov, .org, .edu
  • Books
    • From school
    • From a library
  • People
    • In your Family
    • In your community
    • In your school
    • In your friend group

Valid information can often be verified by looking at multiple sources and is provided by an expert. It should be based on facts and free of opinion or personal feelings. It is important to remember that anyone can publish on the internet, so not all sites are trustworthy or valid. People who create posts, blogs, or other websites, aren’t necessarily “experts” in the subject about which they are writing. Their “facts” may not be true, or they may represent their opinions as facts.

What is Valid Information?

Students need to carefully evaluate the sites they use for research and then decide which ones they will trust. Websites that end in .gov, .org, and .edu are more reliable sources than websites that end in .com because these sites are often not trying to earn money or sell products.

Evaluate

Trusted Site

Is it from a website that ends in .org, .gov, .edu, or .net? Is it current? Within the last 5 years?

What you already know

Does the idea make sense based on what you already know about the topic?

Credentials

Does the author have a background that shows they know the information?

Opinion or Fact

Is the information someone's opinion? Are there any other sources that state the same information?
