Open badges are issued using open standards, which means that they can be easily verified by anyone with the appropriate tools, which helps to ensure the authenticity and value of the badge.
One way to verify an open badge is to use a badge validation tool, such as the Open Badges Validator. This tool allows you to enter the URL of an open badge and check the metadata associated with the badge to ensure that it is authentic and has not been tampered with.
Another way to verify an open badge is to check the issuer's website or other online resources to confirm that the badge was issued by a reputable organization and that the criteria for earning the badge are valid. You can also check with the issuer directly to verify the authenticity of the badge.
The image file for an open badge usually includes the name of the badge, the logo or symbol of the issuing organization, and any other visual elements that are used to identify the badge.
The metadata for an open badge includes information about the badge itself, such as its name, description, and criteria for earning it, as well as information about the issuing organization, such as its name and URL.
Open badges provide a way for individuals to have their skills, achievements, and qualifications recognized and validated by a reputable organization.
Open badges can be a valuable tool for individuals and organizations looking to recognize and validate skills, achievements, and qualifications in a flexible, portable, and verifiable way.
Open badges are digital, which means they can be easily shared and displayed on a variety of online platforms, such as social media profiles, resumes, and e-portfolios.
Open badges can be customized to meet the needs of different organizations and can be used to recognize a wide range of skills and achievements, from traditional academic accomplishments to non-traditional skills.
Open badges are issued using open standards, which means that the authenticity of the badge can be easily verified by anyone with the appropriate tools.
Open badges can be used to track and document the learning and development of individuals, which can help them plan their career paths and identify areas for further development.
In general, the issuing organization is responsible for establishing the criteria for earning the badge and for issuing the badge to individuals who have met those criteria. The issuing organization may also be responsible for maintaining records of the badges that have been issued and for providing support to individuals who are working to earn a badge.
As a user of an Open Badge system, you have a responsibility to ensure that you are collecting, storing, and using student data in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, including data privacy laws. This means that you must be transparent about how you are collecting, storing, and using student data, and you must obtain consent from students before collecting or using their personal data.
In addition, you should take appropriate measures to protect student data from unauthorized access, disclosure, or misuse. This may include implementing security measures such as encryption and secure authentication, as well as implementing proper data handling procedures, such as only collecting the minimum amount of data necessary for the purpose of the Open Badge system and deleting data when it is no longer needed.
1. Directly from the issuer
Some open badge systems allow issuers to directly send badges to earners. This may involve the issuer sending an email to the earner with a link to a webpage where the earner can view and download their badge.
There are several ways that earners can receive their open badges:
Many open badge systems use a badge wallet, which is a digital platform that allows earners to store, manage, and display their badges.
An open badge platform is a software application or web-based service that is used to issue, manage, and display open badges. An open badge platform is responsible for managing the process of issuing open badges to individuals. This may include verifying the qualifications or achievements of the individual, creating the badge design and metadata, and issuing the badge to the individual's online profile or digital wallet. The platform may also provide tools for managing and organizing badges, such as categorizing badges by skill or subject area, and for tracking the use and recognition of badges.
Earners can typically receive badges in their wallet by either having the issuer send the badge directly to their wallet or by connecting their wallet to the issuer's system and importing their badges into the wallet.
3. Through a learning management system
An LMS is a software application or web-based platform that is used to plan, deliver, and manage educational courses and training programs. Some LMSs, such as Moodle and Canvas, have built-in support for open badges and allow earners to receive and manage their badges within the LMS.
To integrate open badges into an LMS, the LMS must be able to support the issuance and display of open badges. Some LMSs have built-in support for open badges, while others may require the use of a third-party plugin or application to enable this functionality. Once open badges are integrated into an LMS, users can earn badges through various activities, such as completing courses, passing exams, or completing projects. These badges can then be displayed on the user's online profile within the LMS or on other online platforms, such as LinkedIn or a personal website.
The specific process for receiving open badges will vary depending on the open badge system being used.

Define the learning or skill outcomes that the badge represents.
Let's take the example of D2S@Ulysseus with the Open Badge "Digital Soft Skills Passport for Student"!
The learning outcomes related to the completion of D2S courses, selected from the European ESCO classification, are:
T2.4 - thinking creatively and innovatively
T3.2 - taking a proactive approach
T4.1 - communicating
T4.3 - collaborating in teams and networks
T6.1 - applying health-related skills and competences
T6.2 - applying environmental skills and competences
S2.7 - analysing and evaluating information and data
S3.3.6 - protecting privacy and personal data
S4.2 - organising, planning and scheduling work and activities
S5.6.1 - using digital tools for collaboration and productivity
Create or identify the criteria that earners must meet to earn the badge.
According to our example of "Digital Soft Skills Passport for Student" Open Badge, the criteria for awarding are:
Have completed the entire Digital Soft Skills course programme and passed the validation tests with a pass rate of over 80%.
Design the badge itself, including the visual elements and any accompanying information, such as a description or criteria.
Here is the "Digital Soft Skills Passport for Student" Open Badge visual, created in agreement with the D2S@Ulysseus project design kit:
Develop a system for assessing and issuing the badges, such as an open badge platform.
For D2S@Ulysseus, we have chosen to use the Open Badge Factory platform which, in conjunction with the Ulysseus Learning Management System Moodle, allows the registration and automated distribution of badges.
Test and pilot the badge system to ensure that it functions properly and effectively communicates the intended learning or skill outcome.
For the D2S@Ulysseus Open Badges, we have tested several times the correct registration of learners having validated the courses on Moodle and the related delivery of Open Badges to learners by Open Badge Factory.
Roll out and promote the badge system to potential earners and stakeholders.
Concerning D2S Open Badges, we promoted Open Badges through different media (web page, video, guides) through different networks and events. The members of the Ulysseus Alliance and some of its partners have endorsed them (supported on the Open Badge Factory platform).
Continuously evaluate and improve the badge system as needed.
The improvement of the D2S@Ulysseus Open Badge system is ensured by monitoring learners' feedback directly or through a feedback questionnaire.
The Open Badges for students and educators are similar as each badge is linked to a course, and the courses themes are the same for both types of learners. The differences are explained by the type of learner concerned and the learning outcomes more focused on mentoring for educators. Look at a model according to what you are interested in!
