What is it?

It is caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. It affects men and women and causes genital infections, as well as infections in the rectum and the throat.

Which are the symptoms?

You can get gonorrhea by having anal, vaginal, and oral sex with a person who has gonorrhea. A pregnant woman with gonorrhea can pass it to her baby during childbirth.

How is gonorrhea transmitted?

Due to emerging drug-resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that uncomplicated gonorrhea be treated with the antibiotic ceftriaxone, given by injection, with oral azithromycin (Zithromax).

Yes, gonorrhea can be cured with the correct treatment. It is important that you take all the medicines your doctor prescribes to cure your infection. Gonorrhea medicines should not be shared with anyone.
