The Students in Temporary Housing Program works with an array of students in schools with high percentages of STH.In my internship at PS/IS 109, my target population are spanish-speaking immigrant students and their families that are living in shelters.

The community

  • Covid-19 has contributed to increased financial struggle
  • Failing communist countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba have forced many to flee
  • Border crisis:
-> Eased travel restrictions permit immigrants to enter if they provide proper documentation and are fully vaccinated
  • Conflicting Trump administration Title 42 Policy refusing asylum seekers will end within 3 weeks

Their Strengths

Within every community, there are its strengths and necessities, some of which need improvement.

Gaps:

  • Clothing is limited in certain locations
  • Medical care must be paid for out of pocket
  • Limited emotional support due to low staff and language barrier
  • Lack of clear guidance for parents to get their own housing

Needs:

  • Emotional support
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Medical services
  • A safe environment to learn
  • Parental guidance through US systems that lead to housing and other needs

Community Needs

Although there is not a step-by-step action plan, the responsibilities of the Bridge The Gap Social workers and interns are geared towards meeting the holistic needs of our students.

  • Provide group and individualized counseling and incorporate Social Emotional Learning
  • Share resources that direct families to pantries and/or clothing distribution sites
  • Collaborate with school staff to discuss interventions to support the child and create a more comfortable atmosphere for learning
  • Using mentorship strategies to improve absenteeism and school behavior

STH Program Address

Due to an expected increase in immigration, there needs to be a focus on getting immigrants out of shelters and into housing ASAP!!!My Proposal: Create a specialized group of bilingual caseworkers dedicated to navigating and guiding immigrant families through the housing system

  • weekly visits to the families
  • Online and in-person workshops (at schools, in the shelters)
  • Tapping into the community's sociability and motivation

My Service Proposal

Thanks!
