Jails were generally dark, cold, and damp! However, some prisoners were transported to places such as Australia where they had to do hard labour. It wasn’t quite a holiday, but you’d get to travel! This punishment had mostly stopped by the end of Victorian times.

Jails were a bit like camping – in terrible weather! They were generally dark, cold, and damp, with open windows exposed to the weather. Conditions improved slightly in the Victorian period because jailers were scared of prisoners.

Prison diets were very limited (prepare to eat a lot of oats and potatoes) – so you might have been ok. Good thing you’re not allergic to materials like straw – inmates slept on this. The straw was actually an upgrade from the freezing floor they slept on in the eighteenth century!

Oh dear. Inmates slept on itchy straw. Prepare to scratch! (The straw was actually an upgrade from the freezing floor they slept on in the eighteenth century!)

They don’t. I’m always calm and quiet. I’m the perfect child!

I don’t answer – I’m too noisy to hear them!
