Understanding Open Badge (definition, relevance)
The Open Badges:
- Are the world's first digital badge format;
- An Open Badge takes the form of a digital image in which information, called metadata, is recorded;
- It is a digital tool that recognises, values and makes visible a skill, a know-how, a participation, an achievement or a commitment;
- It is verifiable and shareable, its metadata making it possible to know to whom the badge was issued, by whom and on what criteria.
Open Badges are a way of recognising what we learn throughout our lives, like a certificate. Their digital and visual format allows a dynamic presentation of skills and experiences, in the personal and professional world.
Open Badges are mainly issued by educational institutions such as universities (40% according to statistics from the Open Badge Factory platform), NGOs (40%) and companies (20%). Their use has been growing strongly since their creation in 2011 by the Mozilla Foundation.
Any person, programme or organization can be an Open Badge issuer, the metadata being verifiable and unforgeable.
The Open Badges can be shared on social networks, integrated into CVs, portfolios and cover letters. It is a tool that will help you to picture your lifelong learning and for an employer it is a guarantee of quality, with verifiable information.
