Villa Borghese

OUR TRIP IN

Villa Borghese is a large city park in Rome which includes green areas of different types, from the Italian Garden to large English-style areas, different buildings, fountanins and ponds.

VILLA BORGHESE MAP

GALLERIA BORGHESE (41°54'N ,12°29'E) The borghese were an ancient important family in Rome. Many Popes were borghese. This beautiful residence is now a public park and a museum, where some of the most important sculpture of Italian art, like Amore and Psiche by Antonio Canova and Ade and Persefone by Bernini are preserved.

Temple of Antoninus and Faustina This temple was constructed by the Emperor Antoninus Pius in 141 b.C. It was initially dedicated to his deceased and deified wife, Faustina the Elder. Because of this, Faustina was the first Roman empress with a permanent presence in the Roman Forum.

Obelisk of Antinoo (41° 54' N, 12° 28' E) The obelisk of the Pincio (or obelisk of Antinoo) is one of the thirteen ancient obelisks of Rome. It has a height of 9.24 meters. It was built in the 2nd century by the Roman emperor Trajan Hadrian in honor of Antinous, the Greek boy he loved; infact on the monument there are Egyptians words that tell the story of the death of the young man.

PINCIO (41°54'N,12°28' E)

Sea Horse Fountain (41° 54' N, 12° 29' E) Viale dei Cavallucci Marini: we saw a big fountain with Sea Horses. This fountain was built in the center of a small square where four tree-lined avenues converge between 1790 and 1791 to replace the previous fountain of the Mascherone or della Vela, destroyed during the transformation works of the park. It was commissioned by Marcantonio IV Borghese, who had undertaken to make the villa commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese into a large fashionable garden.`

Viale Pietro Canonica: there were lots of trees and a big street.

This is Piazza di Siena. It was created at the behest of Prince Marcantonio IV to commemorate Piazza del Campo in Siena, the birthplace of the Borghese family, where the well-known Palio di Siena is held every year.

View of Rome from Pincio terrace. Thanks!

From Pincio Terrace you can see lots of monument in Rome, for example St Peter's Dome, Piazza del Popolo and other monuments.

In the afternoon towards sunset, Rome looks unforgettable as seen from the terrace of the Pincio, a grandiose public park, designed by Giuseppe Valadier (1834), and a favourite urban promenade for citizens. Below is the elegant Piazza del Popolo, towards which one faces as if on an imposing and lively theatre; looking up, beyond the balustrade, the city stretches out: on the horizon dominates the majestic dome of St. Peter's, on the right stands Monte Mario, on the left the Quirinale; in the distance, high above the Gianicolo, one can guess the equestrian monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi. In the middle stand, architecturally well delineated, the ancient 16th century palaces. Towards Piazza di Spagna, the tour continues with the panoramic views in front of Villa Medici, where the cup-shaped fountain known as the 'Vasca del Pincio' is located, and from the Spanish Steps, a grandiose Baroque scenography by Francesco De Sanctis (1723-26). The Pincio promenade can be accessed via the ramps that go up from Piazza del Popolo, the Viale di Villa Medici that connects it to the church and the Spanish Steps, the Viale delle Magnolie and the flyover over the Muro Torto that has connected it to Villa Borghese since 1908. The avenues of the promenade were designed from the beginning to allow the passage of carriages. The only remaining strictly pedestrian access is the one that opens onto Viale delle Magnolie. The monumental access to the Pincio opens onto Piazza del Popolo, of which it forms a sort of scenic backdrop with three perspectives located on the slopes of the hill. These are connected by small flights of stairs and the winding and evocative Via Gabriele D'Annunzio, which, bordered by centuries-old trees and embellished with fountains, climbs the slopes of the Pincio.
