THE TSUNAMIS

There are two types of tsunami: distant origin and close origin. Of distant origin The phenomenon occurs at a great distance, which means that the waves will take several hours, this gives us time to get the alert and begin the evacuation. Of close origin It originates as a result of a large earthquake off our shores, which is a tsunami, a few minutes after the earthquake, which gives very little time to evacuate

A tsunami is a series of huge ocean waves created by an underwater disturbance, caused by earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions or meteorites (pieces of rock that come from space and impact the earth’s surface).

What is and how many types of tsunamis there are ?

A tsunami is a large body of water, moved by major marine earthquakes, collapses of hills or by a volcanic eruption on the seabed, the earthquake of the ocean floor, moves an immense body of water vertically, causing waves in all directions, like the waves a stone produces when it falls into water. Most tsunamis are caused by large earthquakes under the water surface. For a tsunami to occur, the seabed must be moved abruptly vertically, so that a large body of ocean water is pushed out of its normal equilibrium.

how are they generated?

  • *17 July 1998 - Approximately 2,200 people were killed when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Papua New Guinea and caused a tsunami.
  • 11 March 2011 - A 9.1 earthquake in north-east Tokyo caused a tsunami that damaged several nuclear reactors in the area (nearly 20,000 deaths and 2,500 missing).
  • 22 December 2018 - A tsunami struck Pandeglang, Serang and southern Lampung, leaving more than 430 dead, 148 missing and 16,000 displaced. (believed to have been caused by a vocational eruption)

some historical tsunamis

  • The word tsunami comes from two words of Japanese: Tsu meaning port and nami meaning means wave: wave at the port.
  • A tsunami can travel hundreds of miles for hour in the open ocean. It can reach the earth with waves 100 feet or higher and cause devastating flooding.
  • Tsunamis take 5 to 90 minutes to pronounce or create

fun facts

Because they are more at the edge of sea level or there is a huge basin of water that causes the tsunami, they are caused by earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruption or meteorites, for a tsunami to occur, the seabed must be violent, so that the water leaves the sea.
