Literature has existed in the Americas for as long as the people who lived there have been telling stories. As a specific discipline viewed through the lens of European Literature, American literature began in the early 17th century with the arrival of English-speaking Europeans in what would become the United States.

The body of written works produced in the English language in the United States. Like other national literatures, American literature was shaped by the history of the country that produced it.

America is shared by 50 states. It compromises 48 conterminous states occupying the mid-continent, Alaska at the northwestern extreme of North America, and the island state of Hawaii in the mid-Pacific Ocean.

NATIVE AMERICAN LITERATURE(PRE-1620)

Also called Indian Literature or American Indian Literature, the oral and written tradition of song and stories of the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

THE COLONIAL PERIOD (1607-1765)

The Colonial Period of American Literature spans the time between the founding of the first settlement at Jamestown to the outbreak of the Revolution.

The writings of this time centered on religious, practical, and historical themes.

revolutionary age (1765-1790)

Writers focused on explaining and justifying the American Revolution.After the Revolution, this period became known as Early Nationalism. Writers begin to ponder what it really means to be an American.

THE EARLY NATIONAL PERIOD(1775-1828)

The writers of this new American literature wrote in the English style, but the settings, themes, and characters where authentically American. Poets of this time wrote poetry that was relatively independent of English precursors.

The Early National Period of American Literature saw the beginnings of literature that could be truly identified as "American".

romantic PERIOD (1828-1865)

Also referred to as the American Renaissance or the Age of Transcendentalism. The writers of this period produced works of originality and excellence that helped shape the ideas, ideals, and literary aims of many American writers. This period is commonly accepted to be the greatest of American literature.

the realistic period (1865-1900)

Following the Civil War, American Literature entered into the Realistic Period. The major form of literature produced in this era was realistic fiction.Unlike romantic fiction, realistic fiction aims to represent life as it reallyis and make the reader believe that the characters might actually exists and the situations might actually happen. In order to have this effect on the reader, realistic fiction focuses on the ordinary and commonplace.

THE NATURALIST PERIOD(1900-1914)

Naturalistic writings try to present subjects with scientific objectivity. These writings are often frank, crude, and tragic.

Naturalism claims to give an even more accurate depiction of life than realism.

After the American Renaissance, the Modern Period is the second most influential and artistically rich age of American writing.It also produced many other writers that are considered to be Writers of Modernist Period Subclasses.

Generally apolitical and indifferent to social problems, they advocated personal release, purification, and illumination through the heightened sensory awareness that might be induced by drugs, jazz, sex, or the disciplines of Zen Buddhism.

The Beat Generation was a literary movement started by a group of authors whose work explored and influenced American culture and politics in the post-war era. The bulk of their work was published and popularized by Silent Generations in the 1950s.

This period questions the goodness of humanity, explores human consciousness, and upends social norms. After World War II, American literature has become broad and varied in terms of theme, mode, and purpose. They often utilize strong, memorable characters, experiment with new styles of literacy, and challenge the reader to reconsider their contemporary world.

In his Narrative of the Uncommon Sufferings (1747-1760), Briton Hammon recounts a series of remarkable confinements and escapes, before returning to servitude under his captor General John Winslow.

Briton Hammon was an enslaved person of African descent who lived in British North America during the middle of the 18th century. On December 25, 1747, by leave of his master, Hammon left his home in Marshfield, Massachusetts to board a ship in neighboring Plymouth to work on a sailing ship headed for Jamaica.

The Declaration of Independence included these three major ideas: People have certain Inalienable Rights including Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. All Men are created equal. Individuals have a civic duty to defend these rights for themselves and others.

Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was previously the second vice president under John Adams and the first United States secretary of state under George Washington.

The contrast is a play in which Royall uses the form to satirize Americans who follow British fashions and indulge in 'British vices'. Thus, the play often portrays the contrast between European and American cultures.

Royall Tyler is an American jurist and playwright. He was born in Boston, graduated from Harvard University in 1776, and then served in the Massachusetts militia during the American Revolution. He wrote a play, The Contrast, which was produced in 1787 in New York City, shortly after George Washington's inauguration. It is considered the first American comedy. Washington attended the production, which was well-received, and Tyler became a literary celebrity.

Clotel, or The President's Daughter, was first published in England. It tells the story of Clotel, the mixed-race daughter of President Thomas Jefferson, her mother and sisters, and the injustices of their lives in slavery. The novel explores slavery's destructive effects on African-American families, the difficult lives of American mulattoes or mixed-race people.

William Wells Brown was a prominent abolitionist lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian in the United States. His novel Clotel (1853), considered the first novel written by an African American, was published in London, England, where he resided at the time; it was later published in the United States.

Robert Lee Frost was born March 26, 1874 in San Francisco. Known for his depictions of rural New England life, his grasp of colloquial speech, and his poetry about ordinary people in everyday situations.

On November 8, 1894, a poem by Robert Lee Frost, then a 20-year-old grammar school teacher in Salem, New Hampshire, appeared on the front page of the New York newspaper The Independent. The poem, titled “My Butterfly: An Elegy,” was the first poem Frost ever sold, and his first professionally published poem.

Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.

Maya Angelou was an American memoirist. Poet, dancer, singer, activist, and scholar Maya Angelou was a world-famous author. She was best known for her unique and pioneering autobiographical writing style.
