01. RESUME
Grenfell tower, what was it
Grenfell Tower was an old 24 story tower block in the North of London that consisted of 120 flats, with 6 per story. Construction began in 1972, but was finished in 1974. Since the building was old, it was derelict and had poor cladding. The cladding consisted of ACM pannels - a layer of highly combistible plastic called plyethylene. There was a renovation project that happened in 2016, which had plans to brighten up the area around Lancaster Green, as a new leisure center was built within the area. No efforts were made to provide safety for the people living within the apartment complex.

WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY
On the 14th of June 2017, a fire started at grenfell towerr which quickly spread throughout the building. It was shown that a large amount of safety breaches had allowed the fire to spread throughout the building more quickly. The cladding was highly flammable, which had allowed the fire to spread to most of the floors within a matter of minutes. The fire had also spread rapidly horizontally, and in opposite directions, which had caused the fire to spread more rapidly. The cladding also didnt comply for the recommended fire perforamnce for a building with that height, which had allowed the fire to travel up the inside of the building. The windows also lacked a fire resistant barriers, which also allowed the fire to spread more rapidly. The protection provided by fire doors were poor, which allowed smoke to travel into the stairwells, and lobbys, preventing potential survirors from escaping.

03
and why
Who was to blame
- After the fire, the whole of the UK was left to feel uneasy about the situation, wand were untrusting of their council about other flatblocks and whether or not they were safe. Protests happened around London as the public was unhappy with the council. Poor decisions were made when it came to the renevation, which angered more people. It was also unethical of the council to not provide proper safety for the people within the building complex.
- The council that owned the building have been held responsible
- The safety plan was 15 years out of date
- Corners were cut to reduce cost of refurbishment, where cladding was provided and intsalled unsafely
03. goals
Council
Renevation workers
- They did not know whether or not the cladding would work as supposed to
- New Fire doors were not provided.
- No checks on the building were provided.

What the fire service did, and what they could hae imrpoved
Values and standards
The fire service have to be strong, and to show integrity, all while beign disciplined, they also have to be open and honest within everything that they do. The fire service also have to think quick on their feet
What are their values?
What the fire service did
From the very first 999 call, the fire service were very quick to respond, and were there within 5 minutes. This meets the fire services values and standards. The fire service were also very quick to rush into the building and tell people to stay put. However, They had only revoked this stay put advice at around 2:40am, over an hour and a half later, which at this point it was already too late as the fire had spread rapidly. Other than this, the fire service were quick to meet their values and standards, and did the most to help all residents within the building.
