Colosseum
Let's explore and know more about the Colosseum one of the 7 wonders of the world.
The Colosseum is located in Rome, Italy under the Flavian emperors ( ancient Roman imperial dynasty reigned from 69 - 96 CE )
Colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world today.
Here is a photo of the Colosseum in a 1757 engraving by Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
Originally, the building's Latin name was simply the Latin amphitheatrum. The modern name Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium in Latin) is often used. The Flavian Amphitheatre refers to the patronage of the Flavian dynasty, during whose reigns the building was constructed, but the structure is better known as the Colosseum.
Colosseum - Italian: Colosseo ( Kolos 'se :o ) Flavian Amphitheatre - Amphitheatrum Flavium Gladiator - an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Munera - "duty obligation" Venatio - hunting and killing wild animals. Damnatio ad bestias - a form of Roman Capital punishment where wild animals killed the condemned person, usually lions or other big cats. Harena or Arena - a Latin word for sand. Hypogeum - means underground.
The show called munera was always given by private individuals rather than the state. samples of the wild beast are mainly imported from Africa and the Middle East; rhinoceros, hippopotamuses, elephants, giraffes, aurochs, wisents, barbary lions, panthers, leopards, bears, caspian tigers, crocodiles, and ostriches.
The Colosseum was used for Gladiatorial Contests and Public Spectacles including animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, dramas based on Roman Mythology, and brief mock sea battles. The Colosseum was later reused for such as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian Shrine. It is also used for executions ad bestias where the condemned person was killed by wild animals, usually lions or other big cats.
The Arena itself was 83 meters by 48 meters ( 272 ft by 157 ft / 280 by 163 Roman feet ) It compromised a wooden floor covered by sand, covering an elaborate underground structure called the hypogeum ( hypogeum means underground ).
