COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COURSES: A STEP-BY-STEP DEPARTMENT GUIDE
This document explains how community engagement and service learning courses are defined, identified, and managed at San Francisco State University. This document is a resource for departments and faculty on moving a course through Course Leaf, identifying the required attributes, and requirements for student placements and community partnerships.
Defining Community Engagement & Service Learning Courses
Courses are identified based on the student learning experience and community impact – not course title or label. Courses may use such terms as applied, capstone, community engagement, fieldwork, internship, practicum, service.
SUBMIT a CELT Survey for proposed course
Attributes are applied within CIM and are designated through the CSU Community Engaged Learning Tool (CELT) V2 Survey. After submitting the CELT survey for the course, you will receive a confirmation email if the course has been designated an attribute (CCEL or CSLI) or if more information is needed. If more information is needed, ICCE will follow up with you. Begin the CSU Community Engaged Learning Tool (CELT) v2 survey.

Assignfaculty
When deciding on faculty assignments, It's important to consider a faculty member's familiarity with the University and teaching community engagement courses prior to course assignments, especially in disciplines where community engagement may not have been part of a faculty member's prior experience or education. In general, in disciplines where community engagement is not highly integrated, it is not recommended that community engagement courses be assigned to first-year tenure-track faculty or new adjuncts.

Create Student Placements & Community Partnerships
Credit-bearing, unpaid, off-campus learning activities with an external entity require a student waiver and an MOU with the organization. If students are paid and receiving credit, an MOU is not required; however paid students should still sign a waiver which functions as a participation/learning agreement. create Ulink AND REPORTING DATA
The Institute of Civic and Community Engagement aims to collect data on both Community Engaged (CCEL) and Service Learning (CSLI) courses. ICCE strongly recommends departments use ULink, which handles student placements, community partnerships, and data reporting. All currently identified CCEL/CSLI courses are loaded into ULink and any course can be uploaded. For courses not using ULink, course data should be reported to the ICCE upon request at the end of the semester, including:
- course information
- # of hours served: total & /student
- placement sites & confirmation of site agreements
- community impact: hours/focus area
- student activities: hours/category

REVIEW the CEL Essential Elements for cel attributes
Again, courses are identified based on the student learning experience and community impact - not course title or label. For example, if an "internship" has formal department or discipline learning objectives, and student community-based activities contribute to the common good - then this course may be a CCEL or CSLI course. CCEL may be selected as a default. Based on Chancellor's Office guidelines, campuses are required to use two course attributes to identify community engaged and service learning courses:
- CCEL - Curricular Community Engaged Learning
- CSLI - Community Service Learning

Curricular Community Engaged Learning course
Community-based experiences that enhance course learning, benefit the common good*, and take place in collaboration with community partners. Courses vary in scope of community engagement, integration within the course, and collaboration with the community partner. *For example through arts, civic engagement, community health/well being, economic development, education, equity, sustainability,
community Service Learning Course
Substantive community-based learning and the community partnerships are a highly integrated and critical component of the curriculum and student learning experience. The benefit to the community partner (and the common good) is clearly identified, with equal focus on community impact, collaboration, and student learning specifically related to civic learning, equity, social justice or responsibility.

Once you have completed the CELT survey and received your confirmation email with your designated attribute (CSLI or CCEL), access your Course Inventory Management (CIM) and click "Propose New Course." When going through the online proposal form, you will be asked: Open configuration optionsPlease select the attribute that has been designated to your course.

Existing csl Courses
For course that are currently list as CSL, ICCE recommends you still take the CELT Survey and edit the designated community engagement course attribute if needed. All CSL designated courses prior to Fall 2022 should be on the current ICCE CSL Courses List. If the course is not on this list, please email icce@sfsu.edu. *Please note that this list is undergoing revisions based on the current Chancellor's Office course inventory.
