It all started when a group of young people managed to pass themselves off as AOL administrators in a chat room belonging to the support of that company. Requesting passwords and card numbers. They used a program called AOHell to create random account and card numbers to breach the poor security of the system.
The first mention of the term phishing dates back to January 1996. It was published in the magazine “2600: The Hacker Quarterly”. This was adopted by those trying to "fish" for AOL member accounts.
By the beginning of 2004, phishers were riding a huge wave of success that included attacks on banking sites and their customers. Popup windows were used to acquire sensitive information from victims. Between May 2004 and May 2005, about 1.2 million users in the U.S. suffered losses caused by phishing, totaling approximately $929 million. Organizations lost about $2 billion per year to phishing.
In Argentina, a project was presented to penalize Phishing Through this project, we sought to combat the different techniques of illegitimate obtaining of personal information.
