Bathroom basins seem to originate from washstands In the 16th Century, the wealthy would have a wooden washstand in their bedrooms, which would hold an iron jug of water and a bowl to wash their face and hands. If you weren't wealthy, you just got the jug and the bowl.

What is a Basin?

Types of Basin
  • The most common in the UK
  • Designed for bathrooms where the water feeds come up from the floor
  • The pedestal is designed to hide the pipework
  • No Storage options
  • Tough to clean behind
  • Designer options available
  • Taller option available for those with mobility option (approx 7cm taller than standard). Also known as regal height.
Full Pedestal Basin
  • Popular option for smaller bathrooms
  • Easier to clean (you can get a mop right under the basin)
  • Designed to work in bathrooms where the water feeds come out of the wall
  • Gives the illusion of more space
  • Some will come with a towel rail attached on the font.
  • Modern and tradional styles available
Semi-Pedestal Basin
  • Basin securely attaches to the wall using fixing bolts
  • Modern and traditional designs
  • Saves space
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Decorative bottletrap will be required due to the pipework being exposed.

Cuts down to size

Extendable

As there is no pedastal to hide the plumbing, you will need a decorative bottle trap

  • Very much on trend
  • Harks back to the traditional washtands of old
  • Elegant look
  • Can double up as towel storage
  • Decorative bottle trap must be brought separately
Washtstand Basins
  • Ideal for small awkward bathrooms
  • Space saving design
  • Usually wall hung
  • May require a plumber to be sure it will work for
'out of true walls' (ie. not exactly 90 degrees)
Corner Basins
  • Designed to sit ontop of a vanity unit
  • Seamlessly integrates with your bathroom furniture
  • Plumbing is hidden away.
  • Sturdier that a pedestal or wall hung basin
Semi-recessed Basins
  • Can be installed either as undermount or topmount
  • All plumbing work is hidden
  • Minamilist look
  • Popular in hotels
Inset Basins
  • Ideal for ensuits and cloakrooms
  • Can be washtsand, wall hung, corner, semi-predastal or full pedesal.
  • Should be paired with a small basin tap for proportion
