What is a Waste Disposal Unit?

A WDU fits directly under your kitchen sink and will virtually liquefy organic waste.

Waste Disposal Units

What problem do they solve?

Have you ever wondered how best to deal with food waste? Most people do not have a compost bin and may not live in an area that supports local food waste recycling. This just leaves the bin and it will likely start to smell, and ultimately it just gets sent to landfill Waste Disposal Units (or WDU's) solve this problem

Waste Disposal Units

Are they actually scary?

Incredibly, waste disposal units were first invented in 1927 and we saw them become commercially available in 1938 Those early models would have been somewhat terrifying, especially considering that electricity had only just been introduced into British homes that same decade. Fortunately times have moved on and modern WDU's are far safer to use

Waste Disposal Units

How do they work?

You'll be pleased to know that there are no rotating blades! Instead, they have a rotating head disc which uses centrifugal forces to push food waste to a static grinding plate at the edge of the unit.

Air Switch

How are they operated?

Depending on the model you buy, WDU's tend to have 3 different control methods

Waste Disposal Units

Ordindarily, food waste is thrown into landfill which creates Methane - a greenhouse gas 25x more potent that CO2 By using a waste disposal, this harmful gas is sent to a waste treatment plant instead where it can be safely converted into renewable energy and fertiliser This is a big selling point for the environmentally minded

Waste Disposal Units

This is for 2 reasons:

  • WDU's can only fit onto a standard 90mm waste. Some half bowls only have a 60mm waste.
  • Half bowls tend to be shorter in height than the main bowl - meaning the main bowl can often obstruct the installation of the WDU.

The vast majority of the time, the answer will be NO.

Can you fit a WDU onto to half bowl?
