THE KILLING JOKE
- The author of The Killing Joke was Alan Moore, a British writer well known for his comic books such as: V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Marvelman, among others.
- He was born on November 18, 1953, in Northampton, where he still lives. According to the writer himself, his passion for reading began at the age of 5. He lived in a poor environment for most of his childhood into adulthood. Moore began his studies at a school in his neighborhood, it was at this time that he had his first contact with comics, among them the American ones: The Flash, Detective comics, Fantastic Four and Black Hawk. At the end of primary school Alan passed a test for a better structured school, with middle and upper class students. This change of environment was very harmful to him, he became one of the worst students in the school, which left him very unmotivated, besides Alan was expelled, at 17, for dealing drugs at school, according to the same he was " one of the worst LSD dealers in history". After this episode Alan was not accepted in any other educational institution.
AUTHOR
- After his expulsion Moore was forced to do several jobs to support himself, what saved him was his fanzine The Embryo, which he created just before being expelled from school, this had put him in contact with the Northampton Arts Lab group, the that opened some doors for him. His first published texts were in fanzines and alternative magazines, such as Anon, Back Street Bugle and Dark Star, but he only started to earn money when, in 1979, he became a cartoonist for Saunds magazine, where he used the pseudonym Curt Vile to sign the story. Roscoe Moscow. Shortly before joining Saunds in 1974, Moore married Phyllis Moore with whom he had two daughters: Leah and Amber Moore. Alan, realizing his little talent for illustrations, started to focus on creating stories. Among his main initial titles are: D.R & Quinch, SKIZZ and The Ballad of Halo Jones, his second incursion was in Warrior magazine that published collections, and so he started two of his most acclaimed series: V for Vendetta and Marvelman. Both works won him the British Eagle Awards, in 1982 and 1983, in the category of Best Comics Writer. Thus gaining some fame.
- In 1986, the publisher DC Comics sought to rebuild its traditional universe of comic book heroes and plots. Moore ended up writing Watchmen for DC and, along with Frank Miller, redefined the form and tone of the period's comics.
AUTHOR
The death joke begins with Batman's visit to Arkham Asylum, Gotham's sanatorium for the mentally ill. The vigilante visits the clown in a psychiatric hospital in an attempt to talk to the criminal clown and end the long history of hatred between the two men. However, much to Batman's surprise, the Joker escaped from Arkham and had someone else in his place. When he finds out what's going on, Batman goes after the villain.Meanwhile, however, the Joker is already testing his plans. He wanted to show Batman that even the saneest person can go crazy. So he decided to visit Commissioner Gordon. When the commissioner's adopted daughter Barbara (formerly Batgirl, now Oracle) opened the door, she was shot and fractured her spine. The clown of crime took off Barbara's clothes when the clown's companion attacked the police, and in this case he took several pictures of her, who had a fractured spine and was probably being subjected to other types of abuse by criminals. Taking this, the Joker takes Jim to an amusement park where he psychologically tortures the Commissioner by showing him a picture of Barbara. Their goal is to drive him mad and prove to everyone, especially Batman, that it doesn't take much for a man to lose his mind - just a huge personal tragedy.
PLOT
- Created as Moore's take on the psychology and source of the Joker, the graphic novel is not intended to be critical, it was published with the intention of commemorating the anniversary of the Batman franchise and to give more depth to the Joker character.
THE INTENTION OF THE NOVEL
- Batman: The Killing Joke is a 2016 American animated film directed by Sam Liu and Bruce Timm. The screenplay is loosely based on the plot of the comic book; "Batman: The Killing Joke" by Alan Moore, adapted by Brian Azzarello. The film is not considered a direct sequel to the film Batman: Bad Blood it retains the appearance of the characters (only Batman appears in both films entirely)
- The original release of the feature in HD was on July 25, 2016 and in physical media on August 2, 2016.
- The film brings back the first Batman and Joker voice actors return to acting and Kevin Conroy had already returned in animation Batman: Assault on Arkham and Mark Hamill who said he would only return to voice the Joker if an adaptation of The Killing Joke was created.
OTHER ADAPTATIONS
- Timm revealed that the film will screen at San Diego Comic-Con in July. He added that the team had to "add a lot more story" to the film due to the length not being long enough to make a full-length film. In February 2016, concept artist Phil Bourassa revealed that in 2009, Timm was slated to produce an R-Rated version of Killing Joke, but development on the film was stalled after two weeks due to the poor performance of Watchmen, while also showing the Joker concept art. In April, Warner Home Video confirmed that The Killing Joke will be the first DC Universe Animated Original Movies film and the first animated Batman film to receive an R-rating from the MPAA, with Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series President Sam Register, explaining that, "From the beginning of production, we've encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation to stay true to the original story – regardless of the eventual MPAA rating. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience - the comic book community - with an animated film that authentically represented the story they know so well."
OTHER ADAPTATIONS
OTHER ADAPTATIONS
- The Joker is the main antagonist of the 2016 animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke. He is a psychotic, clown-like criminal and the archenemy of Batman, who is bent on proving that anybody can be driven insane simply from one bad day.
- In the comics, the Joker is portrayed as a master criminal whose characterization has varied. The original and currently dominant image is of a highly intelligent homicidal maniac with a twisted, sadistic sense of humor. His most prominent origin story is that he fell into a vat of chemicals, which bleached his skin white, turned his hair green and turned his lips bright red, giving him the appearance of a clown. His crazed grin, psychotic, clown-like appearance and sadistic practical jokes all make the Joker one of the most diabolical villains of DC Comics and of all time.
- He has been directly responsible for numerous tragedies in Batman's life, including the death of Robin (Jason Todd, formerly the 2nd Robin, currently The Red Hood) and the paralyzing of Barbara Gordon (formerly the Oracle, currently Batgirl). He is generally one of the most infamous of Gotham's criminal elements.
JOKER
- Batgirl's last known case was going after a mobster named Paris Franz, who killed his uncle and took over his organization, having an infatuation with Batgirl in the hopes of being her favorite adversary. During this case, Barbara had a brief sexual encounter with her partner Bruce Wayne (Batman), but when the case had ended, Barbara decided to give up on being Batgirl, realizing the danger of being driven to the edge of not caring anymore when she pummeled Paris Franz's face over and over until his face became bloody.
- At the present time in the story, Barbara was visiting her father James Gordon when the Joker, who sprang out of Arkham Asylum, greeted her at the door with a gunshot straight to her abdomen, paralyzing her from the waist down. The Joker had her father taken away to the Bonus Brothers carnival which he had "purchased" from its previous owner while he stripped Barbara of her clothes and took pictures of her naked wounded body in the hopes of driving her father crazy. Barbara awoke in the hospital where she was taken care of and examined for her current condition, where she told Batman what the Joker had done.
- Sometime after the events of the story, Barbara got used to her new condition and had set up a private computer lab in her apartment, where she works as the information broker and hacker known as Oracle.
BARBARA
- When this story was first conceived by Moore, it was supposed to take place outside of the mainstream continuity.
- In his book “The Art of Brian Bolland”, Bolland states that his version of The Joker was partly conceived after watching the 1928 movie “The Man Who Laughs”.
- At the time of publication, Barbara Gordon had already retired her Batgirl alter ego. After the events of The Killing Joke, she adopts a new secret identity: Oracle.
- The Killing Joke was given to Heath Ledger to be used as inspiration for his role as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
- Killing Joke Animated movie was scheduled for a straight to video release, but overwhelming popularity have convinced Warner Bros to do a limited Theatrical release.
- The Animated Movie was originally planned for 2009, but after The Watchmen didn’t do so great in the Box Office, it was decided to delay the project. They believed this to be down to the R rating.
