Comayagua is a city, municipality and old capital of Honduras, located 80 km northwest of Tegucigalpa on the highway to San Pedro Sula. It has inhabitants who are dedicated to agriculture, commerce and industry. However, because it is privileged by well-preserved monuments and buildings, it is used to attract national and foreign tourism. The city has the best-preserved historic center in the country, with some 500 properties including houses and buildings built throughout 36 blocks of land. This site was declared a National Heritage Site in 1972. There are five churches that it has, each one built in different years, but which keep treasures acquired in colonial times, most of them from the 16th century onwards.
You can visit the five churches, the first church in the community is still standing, it is La Merced, built in 1550. Between 1563 and 1711 the Cathedral Church of the Immaculate Conception was built, the most emblematic symbol to attract tourism since in addition to being the largest, it has the oldest clock in Latin America. By 1574 the construction of the San Francisco church began, which preserves in its interior Solomonic baroque altarpieces from the 18th century. In the Cabañas neighborhood is the San Sebastián church. Here is the tomb of General José Trinidad Cabañas, former president of Honduras. The last to be built was the La Caridad church, since it dates from 1640. The city currently has three museums, all located in the historic center. There are four important public squares located in front of the churches, making it the ideal recreation place for families.
Enjoy the historical richness of Comayagua, visiting the three museums that the city has. Visit the Colonial Museum of Religious Art, Comayagua Museum of Anthropology and Casa Cabaña. You can also go to the Caja Real, also known as La Casa de la Moneda, it is an old warehouse in the city of Comayagua, Honduras, which served to store all the tributes of the Hibueras (present-day Honduras) for the Spanish crown during the time colonial New Spain. In 2013 it was declared a national monument, it is an imposing building of coral color and bricks that houses history in its walls.
