"Is Makaton effective in helping children with disabilities to communicate?"

In the future, I am interested in a career in being a primary school teacher. I have seen from experience that schools are mixed of student switch all kinds of abilities and wanted to learn more about how I could help children who struggled. This lead me to do a course in Level 1 Makaton. The course involved learning the basic signs, discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. I really enjoyed this course and wanted to learn more about the sign languages origins and benefits for children which resulted in me picking Makaton as a topic for my Extended Project Qualification.

What I covered...

In my first plan I decided on the following subtopics; Paragraph 1 - What is Makaton, who uses it, why do people use it? Paragraph 2 - The origins/history of the Makaton language Paragraph 3 - Makaton Charities, who are they? Why are they a thing?What do they do? Paragraph 4 - Is it helpful to everyone or just those with disabilities? Paragraph 5 - Summary - Is Makaton helpful in helping children communicate? I think I stuck to this plan fairly well, I just expanded upon it more and added extra once I changed my title, which lead me to zoom in more onto children with disabilities.

Whilst most of these subtopics were in my original plan, whilst I was writing up my project I realised I wanted to add more paragraphs so I could stick to the main focus of my topic. For example, I didn’t plan to write about the negatives as they were quite hard to find however I later felt that I needed to present both sides of the argument in order to strengthen my conclusion. I also rejected some of my paragraph ideas as I felt I had already answered them in previous subtopics and didn’t want my writing to seem incoherent or lack fluidity.
