A BIT OF GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY
MEZQUITACatedral
Under the Caliphate, Cordoba was enlarged and filled with mosques and palaces. The most important one in Cordoba is the Great Mosque of Cordoba (Mezquita) which is a UNESCO site. The particularty of the Mezquita is its multi-religious influence. Infact, after the Caliphate, Cordoba was recaptured by the Christians and the Mosque was converted into a Catholic cathedral.Nowadays, the Mosque, presents a very unique and hybrid style that makes it a must-see attraction in Cordoba.

Did you know that it was here in Cordoba that Christopher Columbus and the Queen of Spain met to organize the expedition that led to the discovery of the Americas? It all started in Alcazar.Alcázar means castle and was built during the Caliphate of Cordoba and later used by Christians which transformed it in a royal residency. The gardens are one of its strong points, in which crystal clear water basins are surrounded by flowers and fountains.
alcazar OF THE CHRISTIAN MONARCHS
Patios translates to couryards in English and refers to the private courtyards which are hidden behind the walls and gates of the homes in the city. These patios are an integral part of the rich history of Cordoba. The Patios are a place of coexistence and a meeting point of the people who are living there. They are decorated with colourful plants, bright flowers, comfortable furniture and eclectic decoration. The Patios of Cordoba arose out of necessity. Cordoba is the hottest city in Europe during summer months - when temperatures frequently reach 40 degrees - so it has always been essential for its inhabitants to have a cool retreat for the hottest part of the day.
