The Origin of the SSA Programme: Shortly after founding Critical Concrete, the incorporation of a summer school programme focusing on sustainable construction became an integral part of how we shared and applied our research in natural construction techniques. From 2016 until 2019, our programme was going strong with up to 50 students from different backgrounds coming to Porto to refurbish social housing projects during the summer. With the demand and amount of collective knowledge between the organisation and mentors ever growing, Critical Concrete finally partnered with ESAP in 2020. The main goal became to expand the learning experience and encompass all the aspects of what it means to truly carry out a sustainable project. In the process, we gathered a team of field experts in topics about sustainable construction methods, responsible urban planning, and effective participatory processes. We are proud to say we achieved to bring together a group of enthusiastic and dedicated mentors who are excited to guide you through this year of transformative education.

Critical Concrete, is a busy non-profit organisation taking on challenges linked to the construction industry and aiming for sustainable practices. Located in Porto, where the need for affordable housing solutions is ever noticeable, Critical Concrete has focused on researching, educating, designing and consulting on alternative construction methods. Our research hub for natural and sustainable construction materials researches anything from Mycelium as insulation to flooring made out of ash and lime. We use these materials as an affordable non-polluting solution to renovate social housing units, which simultaneously advocates for the fundamental universal right for adequate housing. Additionally, we record our findings through articles for our community to be informed and inspired. We decided to venture into educational programmes as a response to the growing interest in our research activities. Therefore, we began hosting an international practical and theoretical Summer school programme from 2016-2019. Its success inspired us to extend the education programmes by launching Criti.co - our sustainability online learning hub, along with the postgraduation program; Sustainable Sustainable Architecture. Our Studio component began since the Porto community started showing interest in our work. Now, we offer architectural consulting to homeowners through our experience and expertise in sustainable construction in and around Porto. Following our philosophy to build with instead of for the people, we engage with the clients through participatory processes and personalized sustainable design solutions. Last but not least, Co-lateral is the name of our Porto headquarters which serves as our office and workshop. Yet, we also love to use the space to host events and educational sessions to connect people with a keen interest in working towards a sustainable future.

ESAP - Escola Superior Artística do Porto was established in 1982 and is a public non-profit higher education institution. ESAP is a space for encouraging research and meetings between artists, theoreticians, researchers, curators, or other professionals, national and international. Both inside and outside the institution, the place that ESAP occupies in the territory of the arts and architecture is manifested in the growing recognition of its partners. Strategically located in the historic centre of Porto - a world heritage site - it corresponds to significant interaction with the local community and the urban environment in which it is inserted. ESAP is one of the associate schools of UNESCO and has established various national and international educational partnerships.

The Origin of the SSA Programme: Shortly after founding Critical Concrete, the incorporation of a summer school programme focusing on sustainable construction became an integral part of how we shared and applied our research in natural construction techniques. Family house refurbishment: 2020 students along with the CC team refurbished a house in Esposende, near Porto with sustainable solutions. Featured construction tasks included installing a new roof, and insulating the house with cork and cladding using charred timber board and batten. Additionally, students built bespoke kitchen furniture using reclaimed timber at CC’s workshop based on the resident's needs and wants. Students also benefitted from having rammed earth expert Hanno Burtscher, building a bench and earth floor at the CC headquarters to prototype this material useful for future projects.

Roof Renovation: As part of the Portugal Inovação Social project, the team and students took on the challenge to renovate the roof of a nearby social house for a Portuguese family. As building a timber structure roof requires precision and care, students partially demolished and insulated the roof using rigid wood fibre boards and tiling it with traditional ceramic tiles.

Public Space Intervention: The CC team performed several rounds of participatory design in a public space in the town of Apulia. The team then developed a design language to build sustainable and permanent wooden structures in a public space. After that, SSA students successfully took on the endeavor to co-design and build the structures in a span of three weeks with the help of interested residents in the area.

Solar Water Heater As part of our research initiatives, the CC team took on the journey to prototype a solar water heater in the south facade of our production centre to take advantage of this resource. Students demolished the existing wall and replaced it with a timber structure which will later host the solar water heating system using metal pipes.

The programme includes lectures, workshops and additional activities to complement the experience! We've had varied topics ranging from hemp workshops to starting a social project lectures and international dinner.

Visas

If you're not from the EU, you might need a visa to enter Portugal. Check for details!

VISAS The workshops will take place in Porto, Portugal and attendance is mandatory. Unless you have an appropriate justification (events out of your control such as an illness, travel restrictions, etc.) If you are not a Portuguese or European resident, you will need to check if your nationality requires a student visa for the year in your country’s Portuguese Embassy. It is crucial for you to start the process as soon as possible. While the general processing time is between 1 and 3 months, it is always better to avoid potential delays. Refer to the following link which covers information about the visa application process, logistics involved, and required documents: https://www.educations.com/study-guides/europe/study-in-portugal/student-visa-7818 Reach out to us should you need any additional supporting documents for your application or run into any issues. ESAP will be providing invitation letters that confirm your enrolment in the university, which might be required for applying for a visa. If for any reason you are not able to obtain a student visa, please notify us immediately. The alternative to arriving in Portugal without a visa would be to apply for a 3-month ‘tourist’ visa twice (for both workshops). However, we cannot guarantee your visa will be approved twice.

The workshops are crucial parts of this postgraduation, so for that reason it is mandatory that you attend for the whole duration. They account for two-thirds of the total hours of the course and provide for a continuous assessment that requires the presence and direct participation of the student. For those working full-time, we encouraged you to negotiate with your employer about taking study leave as soon as possible. The replacement of the workshop with alternative work is possible in exceptional cases, namely: - Proven pandemic situations that prevent the student from traveling to the workshop location. - Proven health circumstances preventing the student from attending the workshop (surgery, illness, accidents).
