SEPTEMBER

Gripe Jam

Some people call it complaining, but we call it the beginning of a beautiful future. Through an interactive brainstorming process called a Gripe Jam, this session will help us identify the problems and pain points at school that can be addressed in future Tea Time sessions.

Intro to Jamboard

I.O.s

They're new and improved and the talk of the town! In the grand adventure of learning, Institutional Outcomes are your students' destination. Come ready to have all your Bloom's Taxonomy questions answered, and dive a little deeper into understanding how I.O.s should be written and implemented.

What methods did we use in the session? In this session, we used a series of Jamboard activities that encourage engagement and participation. These work on computers or mobile devices (although the mobile version can be a little fiddly at first). You don't need any templates to replicate these activities, but if you like the look of what we used, you can click here to get these Jamboard pages as a template you can use in your class! One Second Slide In this activity, students respond to a question or prompt with one picture and one word. This is a fun way to check the 'temperature' of the room or understanding of a concept. Everyone can contribute to a single slide, or each person can have their own slide. Extension: if you have everyone make their own slide, this can be used as an impromptu mini-presentation where each person quickly presents on their slide. Polling In this activity, students respond to a question by dragging a circle over to the option that resonates with them most. If your students are struggling to click and drag a circle, they can also draw a circle or create one using the Shapes tool. This layout can also be used as a multiple choice question. Let's Talk About It In this activity, students respond to a question or a prompt by using the Sticky Note tool. This can be used for quick discussion, brainstorming ideas, checking for understanding, and basically anything else that involves short-form answering. How to Use a Collaborative Jamboard Step 1: Go to Google's Jamboard site and create your Jamboard. You can use pre-made slides, create the slides you'll be using, or just have a blank board you'll add to throughout the lesson. That's the beauty of Jamboard-- it's easy to use on-the-fly! Step 2: Grab the Share link and change share settings. To do this, click the blue Share button at the top. Set your board to Anyone with the link (or Kettering College if you want to restrict students to using their @my.kc.edu accounts-- not my preferred method), switch Viewer to Editor, and then press Copy Link. Step 3: Deploy Jamboard to your students. There are a couple of options for this:

  • Post the link in Canvas. This would be the easiest method.
  • No access to Canvas? No problem! Generate a QR code and/or a short link using something like Bit.ly and put it in a PowerPoint or other presentation for students to scan. This is my preferred method when I'm doing professional development presentations.

Curriculum Mapping

Ever worry that you haven't covered concepts in the right order, realize you focused way too much on one area and not another, come across tools you want to use but don't know how or where, or struggle to organize your course content in a way that translates well in Canvas? In this session, we focus on how curriculum mapping can help guide the way to your learning destination!

Course Design

If Institutional Outcomes are the destinations and curriculum maps the journey, great course design shapes the experiences along the way. In this session we'll cover the best design practices, talk tips and tricks, and take the opportunity to share ideas and explore each other's courses. We'll also introduce a new course design tool you can help trial!

DECEMBER

Let's reflect!

Fall 2022 Tea times were a chance for us to break the learning journey down to its basics and gather ideas along the way. In this session, we'll put our biggest takeaways into practice, set goals for ourselves as educators in the new year, and get some helpful feedback as we prepare to launch into the Winter 2023 courses!

Building Relationships

Building relationships with students can feel impossible in today's educational landscape. In this session, we'll look at ideas and tools that can help you connect with your students even when large classes, online environments, or late sessions get in the way.

Interactivity & Gamification

Transform student devices from learning distractions to learning tools for an engagement slam dunk! In this session, we'll introduce a lineup of our favorite digital resources for building fun, interactive, and meaningful experiences that can take your instruction to the next level.

Same Sage, New Stage

Sage on the stage or guide on the side: who says you have to choose? In our final Tea Time session of the year, we'll explore the pros and cons of different teaching approaches and take a look at how you can use them to reframe your instructional stage -- and where on that stage you should be!
