BOURDOUZE LAKE

INFORMATIONS GPS : Latitude : 45°28'12.0"N Longitude : 02°55'28.9"E Location of the artwork : Several possibilities exist for transforming this space. Since the site enjoys significant environmental protection, the following areas are suggested : - On the lake, in the central zone : The lake nurtures a number of protected flora species, particularly on the bed. Only the central part of the lake can be considered, and on one condition, which is that the work must float. There can be absolutely no contact with the lake bed. - The meadow at the entrance of the path : This summer meadow is located at the entrance of the path leading to the lake. To the right of the path is a magnificent view of the lake and its peat bog, together with the silhouette of the nearby Montcineyre Volcano. This meadow is also flanked by route D . - The meadow overhanging the lake fringed by the wood. At the northern edge of the lake is a meadow fringed by a wood. This space can be used for the work. The meadow is sloping. At its crest, the view is completely unobstructed: The Sancy MAssif and the Chaîne des Puys volcanic plugs can be clearly seen. The most advisable location would be close to the lake. Access : From Besse take the D36 route, bypass Anglard; Bourdouze lake is located about 2km farther on. Turn left onto the road leading to the lake. Lenght of the itinerary : The various suggested sites are near the car park. A footpath allows for walks along the northern part of the lake. Public access : A parking and a rest aerea at the edge of the lake. Description of the site : "Bourdouze" means muddy or wet. Due to an earlier glacial depression, a lake has formed in this solitary place. Part of the area is currently covered by a peat bog. In the past the bog covered a larger area, mainly towards the village of Chirouzes. A stroll along the bog in August reveals exemples of Siberian Ligularia, a plant with unmistakable great yellow flowering spears. This is a rare and protected plant in France, and is more commonly found in Eastern Europe. It is a species which is a relic of the ice age, found only in small clumps and in cold, humid habitats such as mountain peat bogs. Along the meadows, the south bank of the Bourdouze body of water is flanked by bogs. It is impossible to use this part of the site. Very close to Bourdouze Lake, the intact shape of the Montcineyre Volcano can be seen, one of the last volcanic manifestations to occur, some 6 000 yeard ago. Technical aspects : Access by all kinds of vehicules is possible to the immediate vicinity of the sites. The last site suggested, the meadow near the wood, is the most difficult to reach in a vehicle. The 2 meadows suggested are being used for pasture. It would be advisable to meet with their farmers in order to avoid causing them problems with their work.

The flora is typical of the high plains, where there is a complete absence of trees and shrubs; here, only heath, short grasses, and prairie flowers growi amongst the chaos of the stones. This type of plateau is overlooked by jagged peaks of about 1700 m altitude. They confer a remarkable characteristic of grandeur and give the impression of a lunar landscape that is unique in Sancy. The nearby mountains of the ski resort are Roc de Courlande and Mont Redon. Roc de Courlande, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was a destination for religious pilgrimages. Statues of the Virgin are located along the path that leads to the cross at the summit. The Roc de Courlande is a popular destination. Description of the site : The proposed site is a field of a very small area hosting a chapel. It is fully fenced closed because the surroundings are meadows and mountain pastures with animals. The meadow is located on the hillside: western slope. Isolated on the side of the green valley of the Gazelle, the Chapel Saint - Gorgon is a small sanctuary which blends beautifully in natural. Only a very simple stone cross at the top of the building, indicates its religious character. We may be surprised by the circular plan of chapel, uncommon for this type of construction. It represents however, part of a long tradition, which Auvergne seems to have kept long remembered. From the earliest days of Christianity, two types of sanctuaries have coexisted: the churches plan rectangular, inherited from the Roman basilica, and round churches, especially for the baptismal and funeral functions. In the tradition of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem it was built churches round to accommodate the tombs and enclosures relics of saints and martyrs. Gorgon officer at the court of the Roman emperor Diocletian around the year 300, was precisely one of those martyrs led to death for confessing their Christian faith. Its aftershocks, long retained Lorraine, seem to have been reduced in Auvergne in Sixteenth century, a lord of the neighboring parish, St. Hérent. They gave birth to a local cult Saint Gorgon, which explains the construction of the modest oratory, where the lines are carried at Mass celebrated on the feast of the holy martyr. Technical aspects : Vehicle Access: Road and near the trail hiking, being very narrow, do not allow access with vehicles.

Public parking and activities : There is a car park as you enter the woods, and there are benches and a popular hiking trail in the forest. Description of the site : The woods are filled with mostly broad-leaved beech trees. A 600 metre path crosses the wood and leads to the La Bourboule dam and its reservoir of water from the Dordogne River. The forest is over 50 years old, yet has an ancient, savage quality. Legend has it that the woods are inhabited by elves. In fact, the terracing of the vegetation creates the image of ‘elves’ - a combination of small ferns and bushes - living in the forest among beech trees reaching more than 20 metres in height. Halfway along the path, a glade offers another possible area for setting up an exhibition. Although the forest is dense, plenty of light gets through the trees. Its South-western exposure provides sunshine both in the morning and the afternoon. Technical aspects : The path descends slightly and continuously along its length. It is large enough for any four-wheeled vehicle. Best points : the forest is truly close to the centre of La Bourboule: after only a 5-10 minute walk, you leave the town behind and are surrounded by nature. After following the 600 metre path, hikers can either double back on the same path or make a loop along the banks of the Dordogne River. Remarks : the dam is guarded and the reservoir is not an offered location for setting up an exhibition.

By car from La Bourboule: 5 min Description of the site : Roche des Fées forms a knoll above La Bourboule, and provides a viewpoint overlooking the town with the casino and pump rooms in the foreground. The summit is formed of a rounded, uneven-shaped rock. Behind the rock a few birch trees make up the only vegetation at the summit. The forest of Rocher de la Bourboule unfolds off-summit. Along the rock face going down to the town centre, the sheer rock with its projecting ridges is mainly covered with small bushes, blueberry bushes and heather. The top covers an area of about 50 m2, the sheer part is much bigger and measures about 500 m2. Roche des Fées gets its name from the fairies that used to live on its slopes. La Bourboule owes its existence to the wave of a magic wand. It used to be nothing more than a rocky, arid range and the inhabitants begged the fairies to come to their aid. Their wishes were granted, the Upper Dordogne valley appeared, everything became green and the River Dordogne was able to open up a path. Technical aspects : The top of Roche des Fées is not very wide and the rock’s uneven shape does not make it easy to install a work of art. Advantages of place : Roche des Fées is the first place visitors go to in the town because it is accessible, a stone’s throw from the town and visible. This high point is the town’s leading one and La Bourboule can be seen clearly from here. The work could be seen from the town centre. The cliff provides an unusual area for creation that can be seen by everyone

Starting from the falls car park (at the side of the local cemetery) follow the yellow signs. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the footpath, but the road is, however, tarred and easily accessible by all types of vehicles. The last few metres to the falls are steeper and untarred, although still accessible by car . Length of the itinerary : around 20 min one way on foot Description of the site : The Falls are a little less than 10 metres high and are impressive because of their straightness and contrasting colours. The waterfall against a backdrop of black volcanic columns is surrounded by a dense forest of greenery. The foot of the falls is very shallow, as no basin has formed and the water flows swiftly into a narrow stream. The falls are located in a setting of greenery, with mainly pine forest as a backdrop. The soil is a mixture of rock and earth. The south-westerly exposure of the falls allows them to capture the last rays of sunshine. The top of the falls are bare of trees so the spot is bathed in sunshine all day long. The presence of waterfalls in the mountains seems normal. They owe their existence to the hanging valleys, to a difference in height between the bed of the main water course, the Dordogne in this case, and that of its tributaries. The Dordogne valley was carved deep by the action of glaciers, but the mountain streams which drain the high slope have hardly been able to cut into the highly resistant layer of lava at all. This means that the connection has to be via one or more waterfalls which steadily a cut gorge into the rocky substrate known as a "linking gorge". The falls are located in one of the regional forests. Queureuilh forest, managed by the ONF [national forestry organisation], is a regional forest, which means that it is owned by the municipality. This type of ancient forest status is associated with a legacy of usage rights granted in the Middle Ages by the Lords and is very widespread in the Dore hills and throughout all the Massif Central. It meant that the permanent residents of the village had the right to use the wood for fires, building and agricultural tools. The local population are still very attached to this common right. The advantage of the location : - The falls are heavily visited since they form one of three waterfalls, along with the Rossignolet and the Saut du Loup [Wolf Leap] falls. A path known as the "Waterfalls Walk" enables walkers to explore all three waterfalls in an hour's walk. - Many jays, a bird with blue plumage and black stripes, can be seen. - The choice of the falls is explained by its secretive position at the heart of the woods and its waterfall featuring a dark cliff contrasting with the dense green of the surrounding vegetationn Note : The flow of the waterfall remains variable, to be taken into account during the development of the project.

It is perched between 1200m and 1500m high above the village of Murat le Quaire and below the Banne d'Ordanche, with the iconic volcanic hill of Murat le Quaire visible from the site. A summer pasture sometimes occupied by flocks of sheep in the warm weather, the meadow forms quite a steep dome on the south-west flank, like a great hump. It is only the south-west flank which has been set aside for artists. The dominating position affords a remarkable panorama of the Sancy Massif to the east, the Banne d’Ordanche to the north-east, and the Millevaches plateau to the west. The meadow is fringed with pines to the south and west along the road (see the panorama in the film). The meadow is covered with broom, heather and more or less low-lying meadow grasses. The soil is friable, easily worked. Perched on the heights of Murat le Quaire, the meadow boasts an exceptional view of the ridges of the Monts-Dore et and Sancy Puy. Its promontory situation keeps it in sun all day long. Technical aspects : Agricultural activity on the site is fairly present, with cattle herds on the summer pasture. The work must take this agricultural activity into consideration: a fence around the work must be taken into consideration. Best points: An exceptional view, very accessible by all, beside the Banne d'Ordanche, which is very popular in summer. Its lofty geographical position is indeed a favoured spot, with a unique view over the valley of the Upper Dordogne. Notes: The site is often windy because of the altitude. To the south, at the end of the path, a panoramic view over Lake Chauvet and the Cantal Massif to the southwest. The name "Sancy" comes from Saint Sixtus whose day is August 6. Every year on that day the people of the mountains used to climb the highest peak in the Massif, and in their dialect Saint Sixtus became the "Sancy". This tradition survives and every year all the ramblers who want to are invited to climb to the peak of the Puy de Sancy to take part in a friendly picnic on the summit. The Sancy and these ridges form a sharp relief with slopes covered with a velvet lawn. The Puy de Paillaret, the most easterly mountain (in the photograph opposite) is also visible as a more rounded volcano of the Sancy Massif. From its 1721-m high summit, the mountain road leads to the Sancy Puy. On the slopes towards the summit of the Puy de Paillaret, lava flows and tumbled stones can be seen. Technical aspects : The site is very windy because of the altitude and the promontory situation. The meadow located at the east of the path is a broad, summer pasture of ground-hugging, but thick, fat, grass, with no trees to be seen. Before Pont de Clamouze, turn left and stop at the car park indicating the waterfall. Set off on foot from this parking area. Lenth of the itinerary : 30 min return Description of the site : The footpath runs alongside recent plantations of spruce and then a much older beech grove and leads to a summer meadow through which Neuffonds stream flows. The waterfall drops into a small, wooded, hemmed-in valley. The water from the fall flows down the face of an uneven lava flow with jutting out parts, which gives the fall its disorderly look. A wooden bridge crosses the stream at the top of the waterfall flanked by beech trees. At this point, the path opens onto the meadow and the whole waterfall appears. The bottom of the fall is not accessible. The path is only at the top of the fall. The ground is grassy at the top of the waterfall and there are a few beech trees. The area at the top of the waterfall covers about 20 m2 but the meadow around the footpath can be used and provides a much greater surface area. The waterfall faces south-east and so gets the sun all day long in summer. Technical aspects : It is not advisable to install a work of art at the foot of the waterfall, given that the footpath is dangerous to use to get to that spot. Description of the site : The site is a section of a mountain pasture at the heart of the Montagne du Breuil, where you’ll come across a pretty ‘buron’ (little cabin) that is being restored. From here, there are incredible panoramic views of the Massif du Sancy, the Monts du Forez, the resort of Super-Besse, the Montagne de la Plate, the Plaine des Moutons and the Col de la Croix St-Robert. At this meadow there is a first platform, and then a second section near the construction. This place can be very windy, with winds and bad weather coming from the west. Technical aspects : It is possible to gain direct access to the meadow in a 4x4 vehicle. Cows graze there throughout the summer so it may be necessary to install fencing around the artwork to protect it. Added bonus : The site is wild and not very well-known. It is a real pleasure coming across it after crossing through the dense forest. This is a real mountain atmosphere, far from civilisation and with exceptional views. The buron of Venzoux : It was built in the 1930s. The Montagne de Venzoux and the Montagne du Breuil are still used as grazing pastures for cattle and horses. This ‘buron’ is no longer in use. It is currently being restored so that hikers can take shelter here. Some history... There are curious little houses dotted here and there all over the high mountain pastures of Auvergne. They are called ‘burons’ and they were used by farmers and their animals during the grazing season. Between May and October, the animals were taken to the pasture and they were milked, to then transform this milk into cheese. This pastoral tradition gradually disappeared over time, but some passionate people have decided to restore the ‘burons’, either for their heritage value, to transform them into stopover gites or to simply offer hikers a place to take shelter.
