Allows the airlines to SHARE RESOURCES - If the aircraft requires maintence, airline alliance engineers can support around the world. They also share lounges so passengers can use airport lounges around the world.
Allows the airlines to CODESHARE - They will publish the same route/same time so passengers can book it, but it may be operated by a different airline.
Allows for GLOBALISATION - more alliance partners, more routes they can serve their passengers.

Benefits to the airlines

Lower PRICES- By being a part of an alliance, it makes ticket prices more afforable as airlines are able to work together to share profits.
Shared LOUNGES - They can share lounges with their partners in airports worldwide.
Greater choice of DESTINATIONS - As alliances improve routes available to customers, they can fly further afield on just one booking.
Better and greater CONNECTIONS - They can book connecting flights to their final destination through just one ticket.
