In my opinion, the most important principles in the development of materials according to Nation (1993) is that the teacher and the curriculum should be created according to the needs of each student, the assessment should be created in the same way, time and availability of resources is also fundamental. Another principle will be that the course should cover the necessary elements, skills, and strategies of the language. I believe that language learning should work more on fluency through activities so that the student can practice previous knowledge, and apply it in a real context. In addition, the activities or strategies should be repeated in different contexts, increasing communication with others, participation, and interaction in different situations.

What are non-authentic materials?

And the disadvantanges are:

  • Non-authentic materials can be categorized as unnatural, as they are designed by teachers, who simplify and design them.
  • Simplified textbooks and learning materials lack a lack of exposure to the actual use of the language, in this case, English as applied in everyday life.
  • Brown and Hood (1984), cited in Oura (2001), state that Reducing non-authentic teaching materials increases the difficulty of the task.

  • The use of non-authentic materials is considered more appropriate for the students.
  • The design of textbooks is focused according to the student's ability and language level so that the student can understand the lesson and perform it much better.
  • According to the context and culture of the student and according to the language he/she is learning, the teacher should use his/her materials, which would be original.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using non-authentic materials in the class?

According to the text Febrina, W. (2017, the advantanges are:

  • Authentic materials allow the learner to experience the real language and get closer to the target language.
  • Klickaya (2004) mentions that the use of authentic materials gives students exposure to the target language.
  • The use of authentic materials allows the learner to employ language learning in a real-life situation.
  • The application of authentic materials also breaks the paradigm that exists between the new language and the native language.
  • Making use of authentic materials generates greater efficiency when using English in real life, so they can communicate effectively.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using authentic materials in the class?

And the disadvantanges are:

  • Rogers and Medley (1988) mention that authentic edited materials are much more complicated for learners to understand.
  • Authentic materials comprise complex information, in addition to language features.
  • Authentic materials may contain unfamiliar words that may be difficult for English as a foreign language, which will generate frustration and bewilderment for learners.
  • Some studies mention that authentic materials may be of little interest to learners, identified through a series of classroom activities.
