The parts of speech indicate how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence. They can be nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, determiners, and interjections..

Parts of Speech

A noun is a name. A word that refers to a thing, a person, an animal, a place, a quality, an idea, or an activity.

Noun

It refers to an action (write), motion (walk), feeling (love), or state (be, stay).

Verb

A verb says what the subject of the sentence does.

In English, an adjective goes before the noun, it is singular.

John is

It describes or gives characteristics to the noun or the pronoun.

An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb (he sings loudly), an adjective (very tall), another adverb (ended too quickly), or even a whole sentence (Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella).

They replace the noun.

Pronouns

  1. Prepositions indicate relationships between other words in a sentence.
  2. Many prepositions tell you where something is or when something happened.
  3. Most prepositions have several definitions, so the meaning changes quite a bit in different contexts.
