PLAZA DE LA RAZA

"Sacred as the Sun" by mural artist Jose Loza Located at 200 Santa Fe, Long Beach, CA, 90810 Organized through a collaboration between Centro CHA, Long Beach Economic Partnership, and local business leaders. Chosen by the community's Latino and Filipino residents, the mural presents the Virgin Mary flanked by two people wearing a cap and gown—alluding to not just graduating from school, but also opportunity and aspirations for the future. The mural pays homage to the residents of West Long Beach, who are largely from immigrant communities. Artist Jose Loza said the title came from a line of a poem titled "Vatos" by Luis Alberto.

LBIRC is building and sustaining a thriving immigrant-led movement to end the criminalization of immigrants and secure bold protections and opportunities that allow immigrant communities to thrive.

Plaza de la Raza (Place of the People), has been a cultural oasis for the Eastside neighborhoods of Los Angeles, providing year-round programs in arts education and a space for cultural enrichment. Founded in 1970 by prominent labor, business and civic leaders as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, it offers affordable after-school, intergenerational arts education programs to nearly 5,100 children, teens and adults each year. Its mission is to foster enrichment of all cultures bridging the geographic, social, artistic, and cultural boundaries of Los Angeles, and beyond. Throughout the year, Plaza presents more than 450+ classes (beginning to advanced) that are taught quarterly by local artists and performers in theater, dance, music, and the visual arts. In addition, the center attracts more than 25,000 visitors each year with its free cultural programs, and manages almost 300 community volunteers.

CASA 0101 Theater is dedicated to providing vital arts, cultural, and educational programs, thereby nurturing the future storytellers of Los Angeles who will someday transform the world.

The items in these exhibitions trace the history of Hispanic Americans in California from the Mission system and Californios into the 20th century: Mexican immigration into California, the farmworkers' labor struggles, and the Chicano Civil Rights movement and La Raza, which also resulted in an explosion of cultural art.
