Cahokian Woodhenge

How does it work and what does it do?

The most obvious answer is that it was a calendar. Even though it is moslty know as a calendar it had more meaning than that. Some have suggested that the posts represented some kind of engineering device to assist in the layout of the city. Also, due to the sacred red cedar and a number of artifacts found on or near the site it may have also been used religiously.

Basic Function

A solar calendar, capable of marking equinox and solstice sunrises and sunsets for the timing of the agricultural cycle and religious observances. During the equinoxes, the sun rises due east of the timber circle.

Where was it built and what culture built it?

Woodhenge, a mile west of Monk's Mound, is a circle of tall posts used to measure the position of the rising sun to mark the summer and winter solstices and the spring and fall equinoxes, according to the Guardian. They were recreated by archaeologists who began researching the area in 1961 and remain there today.

The woodhenge was built in Collinsville Illinois, by the tribes in the Missispi.

Why was it built?
