Teach a skill

BACKGROUND

(Richards & Rodgers, 2014) (BBC News Mundo, 2015a)(BBC News Mundo, 2015b)

History of Speaking

(Thornbury, 2005)

“Knowing how to make some phrases and pronouncing them correctly doesn’t mean you know a language; you just know how to vocalize grammar”

(Thornbury, 2005)

Speaking is interactive. It requires the ability to cooperate and take turns.

Typically take place in real-time with little time to plan.

SPEAKING FEATURES

It is a skill that needs to be practiced and developed independently from grammar.

Speaking is the integration of all abilities plus pronunciation, fluency, and coherence.

“Fluency doesn’t necessarily mean speaking fast without any pauses. How the placement of pauses also “natural-sounding pauses” contributes to establishing fluency” (Thornbury, 2005)
