The political situation in England, the new thoughts and values of the time as well as other events had a direct impact on the artistic movements of the period.
Enlightenment, rational thought, the importance of reason.

1) Neoclassicism
Buildings with simpler, symmetrical lines but grandeur structures responded, in a way to the excesses of Rococó art
The great fire of London (1666). Some new buildings responded to the Neo Classical style.
The discovery of Pompei meant an awareness over the ancient architecture.

Paint:Serious, unemotional, and sternly heroic.
Neoclassicist belief: art should express the ideal virtues in life and could improve the viewer by imparting a moralizing message.
Painters: depicted subjects from Classical literature and history using sombre colours with occasional brilliant highlights.

2) Romanticism
While the enphasis was set on THOUGHT in neoclassicism, Romantics will focus on EMOTIONS and FEELINGS.
There is also a focus on PERSONAL EXPERIENCE as opposed to Neoclassicism that sought to teach or moralize.
It can be taken as a reaction against the norms and values imposed by the neoclassicism.
