The old Town Hall

The Golden Gate, a historic Renaissance city gate in Gdańsk

The most famous places in Gdansk

Main Town Hall stands at the convergence of Długa and Długi Targ streets. The origins of the building go down to the early Middle Ages. From mid-15th century and up to the year 1921 it was the seat of the city authorities. This Gothic and Renaissance building features one of the most beautiful Renaissance halls in Northern Europe. In the summertime, the tower offers a panoramic view of Gdańsk.

The Town Hall

Dluga Street

One of the most notable tourist attractions of the city. It leads from the Golden Gate (Złota Brama) to the Long Market (Długi Targ), and the Green Gate (Brama Zielona). In the past it was a place where the richest and most distinguished residents of Gdansk used to live.Today it is full of live and with plenty of restaurants, coffee houses and souvenir shops.

Mariacka Street

Another one of Gdansk's charming streets, with more pretty architecture, heaps of amber shops, and a few cafes and eateries. Worth a stroll down if you want a less bustling street than Dluga but still want to see the beauty of Old Town Gdansk. Amazing in each season of the year.

Great Armory - "Zbrojownia Sztuki" Art Gallery is one of the most beautiful and impressive monuments in Gdańsk. The object is occupied by the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and cannot be explored, however, the building itself impresses with its size, the style of Dutch Mannerism, and richly decorated facade. The building served as a city arsenal for almost a hundred years. In 1973, it was taken over by the army and was no longer opened to the public. The stonework is a work by Abraham van den Blocke, prominent architect and author of, among others, famous Neptune's Fountain, and the facade of the Artus Court.

The architectural style of the gate is Dutch mannerism. Next to it is the late-gothic building of the Brotherhood of St. George. Both sides of the gate have attiques, with figures symbolizing the qualities of the ideal citizen. They were designed in 1648 by Jeremias Falck ("Polonus"), and reconstructed in 1878 due to the originals being damaged by weathering over time.

There is also an old botanical garden and a zoological garden in our district.
