The first time they came to England

In 793 the history of Europe, irremediably, changed forever. On June 8 of that year, after a long journey from Scandinavia, several Viking ships reached the British island of Lindisfarne. After setting foot on land, the fierce warriors set their sights on the monastery that stood just a handful of meters from the beach. They entered it, looted it and killed or enslaved the monks who lived there.

To avoid the constant Viking attacks on their lands, the English kings had to pay large sums of money. During the 9th century, the Vikings imposed a heavy tribute on the Saxon kings, the danegeld, with which they bought peace from the Vikings.

What characters contributed to the Viking invasion?

The most important people who contributed to the Viking invasion were:·Ragnar Lodbrok, a well-known Norse king. Ragnar, a hero for some and villains for others, would have committed his acts of roguery during the splendor of the Vikings (from the year 800 AD). Despite being documented as a real character through Norse rhetoric, Ragnar Lodbrok's existence has not always been absolutely clear. Ragnar came to take the city of Paris across the Seine RiverAccording to the Danish history written by Saxo Grammaticus in the SXI, our protagonist was the son of Sigurd Hring, a Scandinavian nobleman who ended up becoming the king of Sweden and Denmark, two territories that used to spread a multitude of swords at that time.

·Ivar Ragnarsson, also known as Ivar the Boneless, was a Scandinavian warlord during the Viking Age with a reputation as a berserker. Ivar Ragnarsson was one of the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok, who together with his brothers Halfdan and Ubbe led the great pagan army.

·Halfdan Ragnarsson was a Scandinavian warlord during the Viking Age and was one of the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok, who along with his brothers Ubbe and Ivar the Boneless, led the great pagan army. It has been suggested that Halfdan is also known as Hvitsärk, meaning "White Shirt".

·Guthrum the Elder, baptized with the name of Aethelstan, was King of the Danish Vikings in the area called Danelaw. Guthrum would have conquered all of Wessex had he not suffered defeat at the hands of Alfred at the Battle of Edington. In this battle, the entire army of Guthrum had to withdraw to their camp, where they were besieged by Alfredo. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle it is explained that the invading army negotiated a peace and that the result was the "Treaty of Wedmore".

Who was the first Viking King to reign in England?

NEXT→

Athelstan (895-October 27, 939) was King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 to 927 and King of England from 927 to 939. His reign is often overlooked by modern historians, who are more interested in that of his grandfather, Alfred the Grande, or in that of his nephew, Edgar the Pacific. However, his period was of fundamental importance for the political development of the 10th century. He was the eldest son of Edward the Elder, King of Wessex and Egwina. Although his parents married, he was declared illegitimate when his father ascended the throne in 899. His mother's low social status was the reason why he left his side and married the one who would be considered his queen and first wife, Elfleda.
