  • Language with our bina brain

What do we remember about language with our bina brain?

We use kind and respectful words

Our words are important

See what they remember from Friday - give reminders and for words are important emphasize: “When you speak people remember your words, and our words carry weight”.

Let’s practise kind/respectful words!

I’m going to show you some videos and we are going to see if we can figure out who is using kind/respectful words!

Play the video and allow the students to say which characters or videos had kind words and which did not and how it affected the other --> next slide

Let’s practise kind/respectful words!

What kind of words were they using? Why were they using them? Is it ok to be frustrated sometimes? Was it their fault? Do we all make mistakes? How can we make up for them? (Saying sorry)

Mitchell: Here you can guide them more- state the words the Dory and Marlin used and give examples and then ask "Was that kind or unkind?" When Marlin is frustrated, "Is it okay to be frustrated?... What can we do when we've made a mistake?"

Who is Fridtjof Nansen?

Fridtjof Nansen 1861-1930

Fridtjof Nansen was born in Norway in 1861. He was a famous skier, inventor, explorer, statesman and humanitarian.

He is most famous for crossing the Greenland tundra in 1888- well before the invention of the car!

Did you know...

Fridtjof Nansen loved nature and would often go into the forest for months with only his dog!

Fridtjof Nansen!

Think:
What skills did Fridtjof Nansen need to survive the tundra?

Fridtjof Nansen 1861-1930

Fridtjob Nansen was born in Norway in 1861. He was a famous skier, inventor, explorer, statesman and humanitarian.

He is most famous for crossing the Greenland tundra in 1888- well before the invention of the car!

The Greenland expedition

Fridtjob Nansen led a team of explorers who skied and pulled sleds across the frozen tundra of Greenland. It took the team 49 days to complete their journey!

The temperatures were −45 °C! That makes Greenland one of the coldest places on Earth.

Did you know...

While Nansen and his team took 49 days to cross Greenland, they stayed in Greenland for 7 months because the ocean was too frozen for any boats to get in or out!

Planning the expedition

Fridtjob Nansen planned the journey with his team. They packed all of their equipment on a sled and pulled it across the tundra while they skied.

Many people thought Nansen was crazy and that he would freeze to death. However, Nansen was confident and sure that his team could meet the challenge.

Did you know...

When his team landed on the frozen ocean around Greenland, Fridtjof Nansen ordered the boats to be destroyed! This way his team knew they had only one option- cross the frozen tundra.

Fridtjof and his wife Eva got married in 1889

Nansen tried to get to the North Pole in 1895, but the conditions were too severe and he was forced to turn around.

Mt. Fridtjof Nansen in Antarctica was named after the explorer.

Later in his life Fridtjof Nansen worked to help people who suffered from famine, plague, and war. He advocated for Norway to join the League of Nations and he helped countless stateless people.

In order to survive the tough tundra condition, Fridtjof Nansen hunted seals and polar bears to eat.

We found some of George's new polar bear friends' homes. Let's take a look inside them so we can make sure we build him a perfect home!
