Climate Graphs
Climate graphs are used to illustrate the average temperature and rainfall experienced at a particular place over the course of a year.
What is a climate graph?
+ Info
Some graphs show both the average daily high and low temperatures for each month. They do this by including two line graphs – the average monthly maximum temperature in red and the average monthly minimum in blue.
A climate graph consists of a red line graph showing average monthly temperature.
The Line Graph
What are the major differences between these two climate graphs?
Yes, there are!
Are there various ways to present climate graphs?
Instructions Your teacher will distribute a climate graph template. Using your trackpad, select each number in order to follow the instructions on how to create a climate graph. select the HOME symbol to come back to this page.

rainfall
There will be two line graphs
Write your heading
location
RAINFALL AXIS Locate the wettest month. Use this information to add a suitable scale for rainfall. Place the rainfall's scale on the graph's left-hand axis.
TEMPERATURE AXIS Locate the months with the highest and lowest temperatures. Use this information to add a suitable scale for temperature. Place the temperature scale on the graph's right-hand axis.
Creating your graph
Plot the average maximum and minimum temperature data, making sure each dot is placed in the centre of the month. Use a red pen or pencil to join the points plotted for the average maximum temperature with a smooth, red curve. Use blue for the line joining the points marking the lowest monthly temperature. Note - Your line must be smooth and dots should not be seen! Exrtrapolate the ends = extend the line to the axis.

Precipitation
Glue in your Climate Graph in your workbook & answer the following questions on the next page. Question 1 - Describe the climate of Sydney. Look at the overall shape of the graph. Is the temperature line steep or gentle? Does it change throughout the year and/or look almost flat? Look for extremes - quote the highest and lowest temperature and rainfall and the month in which it occurs. Remember to quote units, eg Celsius or millimetres. Question Two - Can you identify the seasons when most rain or least rain falls? Or when the highest and lowest temperatures are experienced? Question Three - What is the temperature range for average maximum temperature? Work out the temperature range by subtracting the lowest figure from the highest figure. Question Four - What is the total annual rainfall? Add the rainfall totals for each month together to work out the total annual rainfall.
