PRIVACY
These seven privacies should only be violated by suspicion of an identified and serious crime.
- The Privacy of Body means that your body is your own, and governmental agents may not examine or invade it without your consent.
- The privacies of thought and of emotion are currently seen as parts of the privacy of your body. But if emotion or stress readers become commonplace, it may be necessary to fight for these privacies.
- Privacy of Correspondence means two things:
- you have the right to communicate in private with whomever you choose without anybody monitoring without your consent
- your choice of whom to communicate with – be it a person or a website is equally private
- Privacy of Data - your photos, your documents, the data you do not communicate to others
- Privacy of Finance, your personal finances: wealth, debt, expenditure, income
- Privacy of Identity is our right to go about our daily lives anonymously – the absence of a “papers, please” society
- Privacy of Location is the right for us to be wherever we want without any part of the government knowing about it (endangered by increase of CCTV cameras)
- Privacy of Territory is our right to not have our home invaded by governmental force. Pockets, handbags, the contents of our car – are all part of the privacy of territory.
In a digital world there are questions about the legal right to privacy and where it is relevant. Online harassment, selfie culture, networks like Facebook and Instagram, location technology, and advertisements with their tracking methods pose threats to digital privacy.
What is data privacy?
Data privacy, or information privacy, means handling all data related to a person’s identity with respect for confidentiality and anonymity.
Primary types:
- Non-sensitive personally identifiable information → Information that is already in the public record, such as a phone book and an online directory.
- Non-personally identifiable information → Data that cannot be used to identify a person.
Types of information commonly considered sensitive, both by the general public and by law:
- Personal identifiable information
- → Data that could be used to identify, contact or locate an individual
- Personal health information
- → Medical history, insurance information and other private medical data
- Personally identifiable financial information
- → Credit card numbers, bank account details or other financial data
- Student records
- → An individual’s grades, transcripts, class schedule, and other educational records.
Other examples of information that may be considered personal identifiable information (PII):
- Name, such as full name, maiden name, mother’s maiden name
- Personal identification number, such as Social Security number (SSN), passport number, driver’s license number, taxpayer identification number, patient identification number, or financial account or credit card number
- Address information, such as street address or email address
- Personal characteristics, including photographic images (especially of face or other distinguishing characteristic), x-rays, fingerprints, or other biometric images or template data (e.g., retina scans, voice signature, facial geometry).
- Information about an individual that is linked or linkable to one of the above (e.g., date of birth, place of birth, race, religion, weight, activities, geographical indicators, employment information, medical information, education information, financial information).
SECURITY
What is cyber security?
Cyber security is the use of technologies to protect systems, networks, programs, devices and data from digital attacks. It aims to reduce the risk of cyber-attacks and protect against the unauthorized exploitation of systems, networks and technologies.
Why is cyber security important?
Cybersecurity is important because it protects all categories of data from theft and damage. This includes sensitive data, personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), personal information, intellectual property, data, and governmental and industry information systems.
What is network security?
Network security is protection of the access to files and directories in a computer network against hacking, misuse and unauthorized changes to the system. An example of network security is an anti-virus system.
Why is network security important?
Network security is important for home networks as well as in the business world. Most homes with high-speed internet connections have one or more wireless routers, which could be exploited if not properly secured. A solid network security system helps reduce the risk of data loss, theft and sabotage.
Network Security involves access control, virus and antivirus software, application security, network analytics, types of network-related security
What is internet security?
Internet security is focused on the specific threats and vulnerabilities of online access and use of the internet. In today's digital landscape, many of our daily activities rely on the internet.
Why is Internet security important?
Internet or web security is important for keeping hackers and cyber-thieves from accessing sensitive information. Without a proactive security strategy, businesses and individuals risk the spread and escalation of malware, attacks on other websites, networks, and other IT infrastructures. Internet security will protect you from intrusion or fraud by online viruses, trojans and worms. These allow identity thieves to steal private information such as your files, passwords and even sensitive financial information.
How can I protect my Internet security?
Here are our 10 most important tips for staying safe online.
- Don't open mail from strangers.
- Make sure your devices are up to date.
- Use strong passwords.
- Use two-factor authentication.
- Don't click on strange-looking links.
- Avoid using unsecured public Wi-Fi.
- Back up your data regularly.
- Be smart with financial information.
- Educate your family
- You can be taking all the right precautions on your home security network, but if your family and other people using your network aren’t doing their part to keep everything secure, your efforts might not be enough.
- Avoid sharing personal information
It’s easy to get comfortable with sharing a little too much personal information online. But you may be surprised at how much damage cybercriminals can do with just a little bit of information.
To keep it safe, never share identifying details, like your full name, address, or financial information with strangers you meet online. You should also be careful about the usernames you create for websites — there’s no need for them to include your real name. And be sparing with the amount of information you share in online surveys or forms. Most of the time, little to no personal information is genuinely needed to complete them.
