ARCHITECTURE AND ART
In Spain, there have been lots of civilizations. Each civillization has their own culture, which involves the architecture, the food, the clothes etc. Right now in Spain, we have about 12 different types of architecture:
- Roman and pre-Roman architecture
- Pre-Romanesque architecture
- Romanesque architecture
- Gothic architecture
- Mudejar architecture
- Hispano-Muslim architecture
- Renaissance architecture
- Baroque architecture
- Bourbon's architecture
- Neoclassical architecture
- XIX century architecture
- XX century architecture
ROMAN ARCHITECTURE
Roman amphitheatre in Málaga
The Roman Empire made his entrance in Spain in the year 218 BC. They built a huge variety of monuments, from aqueducts to amphitheatres. But they all had the same style and characteristics:
- Huge monuments with spiritual meanings
- Lots of differents materials were used like: wood, concrete, bricks etc
- Constant use of vaults
- The monuments weren't just for decoration, but for practical use.
PRE-ROMANIC ARCHITECTURE
Asturian church
It started after the fall of the Roman Empire. In Spain, it is represented by:
- Visigothic architecture: wooden roofs and barrel vaults. Bricks were not used, and neither were buttresses.
- Asturian architecture. constant use of vaults. Unlike the Visigothic architecture, bricks and buttresses were used.
- Mozarab architecture. absence of external decorations. Dominance in the technic of ashlars.
- Architecture of repopulation: Cristian's kingdoms in the north of Spain. Use of the horsehoe arch and aliz.
ROMANIC ARCHITECTURE
Basilica of Saint Isidoro of Leon
It started in the XI century. The characteristics were:
- Perfect archs
- Barrel vaults
- Decorated principal entrances
- Solid walls
- Small and geometrical ornaments
- Doors next to windows
- No natural light
- Combination of curved and straight lines
- Funeral chapels
- Capitals in the columns
GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE
Burgo's cathedral
Style that appeared in Spain during the medieval times. It started in the XII century. Its origin is in France. Its characteristics were:
- Pointed arch
- Ribbed vaults
- Islamic influence
- Less verticality and luminosity
- More widht
- Stained glass windows
- Buttress
- Religious images
MUDEJAR ARCHITECTURE
Teruel's cathedral
It was developed in the Cristians kingdom of the peninsula. Influenced by the Hispano-Muslim architecture. In León and Aragón, the Mudejar art is really concentrated. Characteristics:
- Bland and cheap materials
- Small ashlars
- Flat roofs
- No vaults
- Lots of synagogues
- Ceramics were introduced and they became very popular
- Bricks were used in walls and pilars
RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE
El Escorial
It starts with the Catholic Kings in the XV century. It comes from Italy. Characteristics:
- Desire of of making perfects builidings from a tecnical point of view
- Simple, simetrical and clear architecture
- Facades
- Pilasters
- Garlands
- Candelabrums
- Medallions
