How it used to be:

history

Zagreb as we know it today dates to the Middle Ages and the settlements on two hills, Gradec and Kaptol. The name “Zagreb” was first recorded in the 12th century, and it became a free royal city in 1242. Today the city is divided into 17 districts.

3rd stop

The heart of Zagreb is Ban Jelačić Square. It is the central square and all streets lead to it. The old clock at the square serves as a meeting point for many. There is also Manduševac Fountain – if you throw a coin into it, it will bring you good luck. In spring the city streets become promenades, places to get a cup of coffee and relax. There are many cafés near Preradović Square and in Tkalčićeva Street where people sit and sip coffee for hours. The Archaelogical Museum, the Music Pavilion and King Tomislav Square are just a short walk away.

What you must see:

city sights

4th stop

Zagreb is a green city because there are numerous parks and gardens where you can enjoy a sunny day. There are Strossmayer Promenade, Zrinjevac Park and the Botanical Gardens to name a few. Maksimir is the biggest park in the city and includes the city ZOO. There is also Jarun lake, a recreational sports center, where you will find cycle paths, footpaths and sports courts for everyone to use. Jarun is often referred to as the Zagreb Sea.

If you visit, you must get some original souvenirs like the licitar, a traditional decorative heart-shaped biscuit which is given as a symbol of love and affection for special occasions, or red Šestine umbrellas.

What to get:

Ante Kovačić Primary School is located in Špansko, a neighborhood in the west of Zagreb. It was built in the 1980s and today over a thousand students attend it. A group of 8th graders participate in the eTwinning project “Welcome to my country!” We decided to join because we like English, geography and history. Our goal is to create postcards and short reports on places you can visit in Croatia. We can’t wait to learn more about different countries and their cultures!
