The United States (U.S. or US), officially the United States of America (U.S.A. or USA) and commonly known as America, is a country primarily located in North America.

The USA

The USA is an enormous country.

It's the 3rd biggest country in the world.

The United States is the world's third largest nation by total area (land and water), ranking behind Russia and Canada and nearly equal to China.

It has the 3rd largest population in the world.

It's about 4,830 km from the east to the west coast.

It consists of 50 states: 48 contiguous states and 2 non-contiguous ones (Alaska and Hawaii).

The USA are divided into 6 time zones.

It has significant land borders
with Canada to the north
and Mexico to the south.

As the second largest ocean basin, the Atlantic Ocean borders the east coast of the U.S., while the Pacific Ocean, Earth's largest ocean basin, borders the U.S. west coast.

The country was first settled by the English in the 1600s. It remained a British colony until July 4, 1776. Later, the colonies declared independence, and the independence was firstly stated in a document that was written by Thomas Jefferson of Kingdom of Great Britain and thus, the foundation of United States of America was laid.

On September 9, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the new name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA for what had been called the "United Colonies.” The name United States of America has remained since then as a symbol of freedom and independence.
