Context
- Library instruction courses for undergraduate and PhD students in science, engineering and science education. Usually I talk about online database, library catalog, open access, fake news…
- The courses last 2 hours, they can be face-to-face or online.
- Since 2021 the Aix Marseille University libraries have a Genial.ly subscription

RIGHT!
Why using Genial.ly ?
- Librarians in our university are very concerned about innovative pedagogy and we were lucky to have a subscription to the paid version of Genial.ly.
- Some colleagues have used it for online visit of their library and an educational engineer from the university has created an escape game last September
- I was using Moodle and Wooclap quizz but I wanted to create new activities to engage students and change their mind towards library instruction : you’re not in a dusty library :)
- Because it's easy ! We have created with Gabrielle Regula (one of the facilitator of the workshop) a game in 2 hours for a CIVIS workshop
FOR 100 POINTS
Which game do you want to try ?
25 POINTS
"Open science wheel" & "Trivial library" (for PhD students)
"The bibliophile dragon" and "Monopo-Lis" (for undergraduate students)
"Eurekatrice" (for everyone)
"Open science wheel" and "Trivial library"
- Those games are used at the begining of the online sessions for PhD students during online sessions.
- I share the screen with them and students are playing together during 15 minutes.
- I use it as an introduction for the session and to evaluate their knowledge at the begining of the course.
- I have just adapted the template from a Genially quizz
"The bibliophile dragon" and "Monopo-Lis"
- Those games have been designed for undergraduate students in Science, and the games can last 45 minutes.
- "The bibliophile dragon" is an online escape game played by students after a live escape game in the library before Christmas. They are supposed to play alone and have complementary resources on Moodle to help them.
- "Monopo-Lis" have been used to make them know databases, and they play it by teams. I had to use a Wooclap quiz simultaneously because I wanted to time their answers.
"Eurekatrice"
- This is an online escape game version of a card game created with Gabrielle REGULA (one of the facilitator of this workshop). In Aix Marseille University, there is a Vice President for gender equality and fight against discrimination, and we have a strong support to develop educational games on this topic.
- We decided to make people discover great female inventors who have changed our everyday life.
- This 20 minutes game has also been completed with Kahoot quiz.
To conclude
- Positive feedbacks from the students : "It was great, the online game was a great way to introduce us to the library"
- Very easy to use and you can add useful tools (like a timer) with a free website
- After my sessions, I have decided to include Genial.ly in my one hour workshops. Students in science education were the most interested.
- You can't work simultaneously with a colleague on the same Genial.ly game.
- Some templates are free but not all of them !
