Stress of professors

What kind of stress do professors experience and why?

02

Stress of professors

  • Every individual experiences stress
  • Affects everyone differently
  • People have different coping strategies (e.g. Yoga)
  • Especially professors are at risk

Literature

High Demanding Tasks of Professors:
  • doing research
  • teaching
  • publishing papers
  • mentoring
  • supervising PHD’s

Almost half of all professors considered leaving higher education due to stress, lack of promotion, and dislike for their current working conditions (Berrett, 2012)

02

Stress of professors

Interview

Professors have to translate exams by themselves which costs time and energy

Translation

Being new at the VU is not easy and especially when one is alone

New Arrival

Professors have to manage every deadline on time especially for creating exams

Strict Deadlines

Previous trainings

What are the already existing interventions/trainings?

Previous Trainings

Employee assistance program is one example of how you can help employees resolve a variety of issues that contribute to stress, which in turn, may be adversely affecting their work performance

EAP

Yoga can help reduce stress because it promotes relaxation, which is the natural opposite of stress. Yoga can benefit three aspects of ourselves that are often affected by stress: our body, mind, and breathing.

YOGA

Exercise has some direct stress-busting benefits. It pumps up your endorphins. Physical activity may help bump up the production of your brain's feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins.

Exercise

Stress can be reduced by consciously breathing using the diaphragm. Abdominal breathing helps to control the nervous system and encourages the body to relax, bringing about a range of health benefits.

Our Ideas

A get together for professors in order to socialize more

Happy Hour

To help new professors at the VU we want to voluntraily assign a 'buddy' to every new professor

Buddy 'System'

To take away stress a new department for translating exams should be created

Translation Department

01

The more communication is done between professors the more comfortable they feel to share their stressors

Communication

Empathy

By coming together on a regular basis we assume that coorperation will improve between colleagues

Coorperating

The professors will be able to learn how to transfer resposibility for specific tasks to another person such as translation tasks

Delegation

The more individuals socialize the more likely it is that they will further improve their understanding of others

04

Skills

How to convince professors to participate

Step 2

Explain why the programme is important

Step 3

Explain the benefits they will gain from it

Step 4

Explain that it is not mandatory and they can leave at any time

Step 5

Give incentives such as the benefits of connecting with others

Step 1

Explain what the programme is about

How to make our training appealing?

06

budget

Costs associated with the programme

06

Budget

Total:

$15.200 €

Costs (per month) are estimated by: Happy Hour = 200 € per meeting once a month ; Translator = 3000€ per translator for only Psychology faculty
