What makes a good summary ?

Paraphrase the original text and use your own words. Never quote directly from the text.

Use present tense.

Use neutral and formal language.

The length depends on the text (about 1/3 of the original).

Make sure that somebody who doesn't know the original can understand the text.

Leave out unnecessary details.

Narrative perspective

  • What do we learn about the characters?
  • Who are the characters?
  • How are they depicted?

Stylistic devices and their effect

What important general themes are addressed?



Always find evidence in the text and write it down (quotations).
