Individual Interviews

Main results - STUDENTS

  • Students aren't aware of specificities and difficulties of remote/hybrid internships.
  • Students struggle with adapting to hybrid or distant internships.
  • Main struggles: lack of communication and organization.
  • Necessary competencies: autonomy, organisational, adaptability.
  • Necessary means: technical means, supervision from the employer and integration/adaptation time.
  • Students would prefer a more frequent supervision from their employers but also from their academic advisors.
  • Disadvantages according to students: isolation feeling, lack of communication and employer supervision
  • Students prefer hybrid interships

MAIN RESULTS – EMPLOYERS

  • More than half of employers implemented remote work in 2020 (because of the health crisis)
  • More than 70 % of employers declared that the health crisis impacted their number of internship offers
  • On average, employers propose that students work remotely once or twice a week
  • On average, employers work with more than 3 students remotely with an average of one meeting per week
  • Main tool to integrate the student on their first day: an online meeting or an on site meeting
  • Main struggles: availability, technical, organisational and communication difficulties.
  • Disadvantages according to employers: lack of interpersonal relationships and communication, training interns is time-consuming

MAIN RESULTS – ACADEMIC ADVISORS

  • Academic advisors are not trained sufficently to follow their students in their remote interships
  • Main struggles: technical and organisational difficulties
  • Main advantages according to academic advisors: easy contact, flexibility, efficiency, autonomy, no transport, enhanced computer skills
  • Main disadvantages according to academic advisors: organisation, it is harder to solve problems between the student and the hosting structure remotely, no actual immersion in the company
  • Essential aspects to supervise students in remote / hybrid interships according to academic advisors: regular monitoring, organisation
  • Academic advisors wish to retain the possibility for students to complete hybrid or remote internships

MAIN RESULTS – UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF

  • The main administrative struggles regarding remote intership agreements are :
1. Signature procedures 2. Legal matters

3.Legislation regarding interships completed in foreign companiess 4. Legislation regarding interships completed abroad 5. The student's insurance
  • No concrete differenciation between remote and hybrid internships in administrative procedures
  • Two main disadvantages according to administrative staff: Communication difficulties with hosting structures, lack of creativity (time difference...)
  • Other disadvantages: no effective network, lack of attention from students and information is very often descending

Interviews: the confirmation

  • Difficulties for students to find hybrid or distant interships
  • Administrative procedures before, during and adfter the intership are still vague
  • The adaptation of processes and organisational, administrative and technical tools to the digital reality of internships is requested (reinforcement of universities' digital capacities)
  • It is essential to train students better for hybrid or remote internships, but also to train teachers to use digital tools for an optimal monitoring
  • It is primodial to overcome communication difficulties in the triangle academic advisors - students - employers, as the meeting of all parties is not compulsory within the framework of internships, whereas both students and employers consider it is necessary to allow the employer to understand better the student's university curriculum and to overcome:
  • Problem of integration at work.
