School policy is that every phone on site must have app installed. If a phone is found that does not have the app installed then the presumable consequence is confiscation for collection by parents.

At the start of a lesson, the teacher opens the website and selects the class. They are prompted to enter the finish time of the lesson and a tick list of students to remove anyone absent from being linked. Once the teacher clicks LINK, the students phones will revert to the 'plain screen' app and have only permissions and apps available as approved by the teacher.

Students can request specific app permission. They click 'request', scroll through their installed apps and select. This pops up on the teacher screen for review.

Whilst linked, phones can only do what the teacher has given permission for. So, for example, the teacher could give permission all students to use their camera if students need to take a picture of the notes on the board. This can be removed by the teacher again at any point by cancelling the permission.

Teachers can also select 'Allow' on each individual student and control permissions. Say you want to reward a student with the ability to listen to some music while working, this then appears on their 'plain screen' as useable.

This view also shows that every student apart from Dave currently has Kahoot open. Allowing the teacher a quick view of who to nudge.

If a phone becomes unlinked during a session, their box will turn red on the teacher's screen and maybe buzz to draw attention. Turning a phone off and on again or into flight mode should not exit the app.

Any students who do not have a phone and therefore no app installed will be shown. If that student is then seen with a phone consequences are straight forward.

School leaders will also have access and access to larger groups as well as individuals. They can also control what happens at break and lunch.

This also enables staff to be confident that there will be a good number of usable devices (albeit smaller screens) every lesson. Most schools are a decade away from having tablets/laptops (with charge) available every lesson for every student.

This system will at long last provide simple and easy balance to mobile phone use. Students causing problems can be managed without affecting other students massively reducing stress to staff.
